  • A Hmong ethnic minority woman in Ban Long Lan carries a bowl of Arabica coffee cherries harvested for ‘Saffron coffee’, Luang Prabang province, Lao PDR. The coffee is grown in the high mountain peaks and plateaus in Luang Prabang over 800 meters above sea level. In November, December and January Saffron Coffee coffee farmers gather all of their family members to hand pick only the red-ripe cherries. It will take several passes over these few months to harvest all of them. These farmers were once producers of opium, but who have been impoverished by lack of a replacement crop in the wake of opium’s prohibition by the Lao government. Saffron Coffee’s goal in helping these farmers grow coffee is to give them a viable and sustainable cash crop, developing their economy, and thus giving them the ability to buy medicines and send their children to school.

  • A jet aircraft flies past the newly-completed One World Trade Center (WTC) on what was Ground Zero on the September 11th 2001 attacks on New York City, USA. As an ironic coincidence, we see the airliner flying high over Manhattan, passing the tall skyscraper that is being finished. The 104-story supertall structure, which shares a name with the northern Twin Tower in the original World Trade Center that was destroyed in the September 11 attacks, stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre (6.5 ha) World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. It was architect Daniel Libeskind who won the 2002 competition to develop a master plan for the World Trade Center's redevelopment.

  • Weeding around the tea bushes in the Phunoi village of Ban Phou Soum, Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. For a long time, Komaen was the only important tea plantation in the province. The Chinese demand for tea was great, and so tea became an important resource for Phongsaly province.

  • Before they were all replaced as working modes of public transport, a conductor is seen while travelling along a London road, as part of a two-man crew of a number 11 red London bus, England UK. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage and tourist routes. From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon. The conductor is the last human link with friendly public travel in London. He is usually a friendly face to accompany unsure travellers, often helping them reach their stop and answering questions about the journey with good humour and kindness. Their removal in favour of single driver crews meant that bus travel became more intimidating.

  • New fir tree growth on the site of one of Yellowstone National Park's great fires. The great fire of 1988 devastated huge swathes of forest. In the park, the natural order of life rules. If trees fall, they are left where they are, if a tress falls across a road, the dead tree is cut but only up to the edge of the road. Here we see the new growth beneath the burnt older woods. New replacing old, the regeneration of this wild land.

  • In the heart of the City of London, a caterpillar tracked crane tears down the walls of an old 70s office block close to St Paul's Cathedral, England. As a pedestrian walks past the blue hoardings that protect passers-by like him, the rubble is piled high before being removed as spoil to make way for an brand new construction that appears in an artist's impression picture on the right, above two site engineers wearing fluorescent jackets and hard hats. This is a scene of renewal in London's financial district. Of optimism and regeneration as businesses invest in new workplaces and replacing the tired, old offices that cannot accommodate new computer and server cabling technology.

  • Against orange evening light, a forest of high-rise cranes stand upright at the masive Canary Wharf development on London's Docklands, England. It is early evening and the crane drivers have left for the day, the day's shift have stopped work before resuming tomorrow. The silhouetted lines of each structure stand out clearly against the skyline before the regeneration of this region of East London grows upward. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • The soon to disappear market at Elephant & Castle shopping centre in the London borough of Southwark. Its demise will be welcome to many locals who see Elephant as an inner-city ghetto though gentrification at the expense of affordable housing provokes others to protest. Lend Lease is working in partnership with Southwark Council to deliver a £1.5 billion regeneration project in Elephant & Castle. Over the next ten years, we will build nearly 3,000 new homes, over 50 shops and restaurants, and a brand new park. The Elephant & Castle redevelopment is integral to Southwark’s wider regeneration plan, which includes the creation of a new pedestrianised town centre, market square, 5,000 new and replacement homes, approximately 500,000 square feet of retail and leisure space, an integrated public transport hub and five green spaces.
