  • Members of a local hunt ride their horses on a hillside bridle path on the Welsh/English border between Gladestry and Kington. Riders ontheir horses make their way down a footpath/bridleway from the 426 metres high Hergest Ridge towards Gladestry in Wales. A young boy pushes his bike up the hill as the horses pass. The ridge inspired an album by English multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield, Hergest Ridge: So if you feel a little glum, to Hergest Ridge you should come. In summer, winter, rain or sun, its good to be on horseback.

  • Late orange sunlight plays across upper slopes of Sgorr Dhearg, a mountain in Glencoe, Scotland. With low clouds swirling around the peaks of these Scottish Highland hills, a shaft of sunlight has suddenly illuminated a lower ridge of the 1,024 feet peak and shows it to be surprisingly fertile, rather than barren rock. Grasses and native heathers grow in abundance to make it another popular mountain for walkers and more adventurous climbers. Beyond is a different story where dark tones reveal more sinister weather moving in. The climate in this region of northern Britain is unpredictably changeable and many rescues by RAF helicopter is often required to save those caught high and unprepared

  • A walker admires the view across the escarpment of Tennyson Downs on the Isle-of-Wight. Looking over his shoulder into the distance, the walker is alone on his solo pursuit along some of Britain's most beautiful coastlines, here on the south coast. The rolling downland stretches westwards - its white chalk cliffs famous for symbolising England's southern limits. Tennyson Down is a hill at the west end of the Isle of Wight just south of Totland. Tennyson Down is a grassy, whale-backed ridge of chalk which rises to 482 ft/147m above sea level. Tennyson Down is named after the poet Lord Tennyson who lived at nearby Farringford House for nearly 40 years. The poet used to walk on the down almost every day, saying that the air was worth 'sixpence a pint'.

  • The WW1 Courcelette cemetery in Picardie, France. Courcelette was a major tactical objective in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette during the Somme Offensive of the First World War during which the nearby village was razed. Courcelette is 10 kilometres north-east of the town of Albert, just off the D929 road to Bapaume. The cemetery was greatly enlarged after the Armistice when almost 2,000 graves were brought in, mostly those of men who died around Courcelette and Pozieres in 1916. The Cemetery, signposted in the village, is approximately 1 kilometre west of the village on the south side of a track (suitable for cars) from the secondary road from Courcelette to Pozieres.

  • A farmer ploughs his field using a Ford TW-25 tractor in Lincolnshire, England. The large hydraulically-driven machine drives over the land with its plough towed behind over hard-looking ground bought by a local dealer called Sharmans of Grantham, the nearest town. The word Ploughman is on the tractor's front, perhaps a nickname for this local landowner. An escarpment rises in the background towards a farmhouse on its ridge.

  • Using techniques developed over thousands of years, traditional thatcher lays straw on a barn roof in Suffolk, England. Balancing across the width of the roof’s surface, the man uses a Shearing Hook to lay the straw into the outer weathering coat of the roof’s slope. Using techniques developed over thousands of years, good thatch will not require frequent maintenance. In England a ridge will normally last 10–15 years. Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge (Cladium mariscus), rushes and heather, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof. It is a very old roofing method and has been used in both tropical and temperate climates. Thatch is still the choice of affluent people who desire a rustic look for their home or who have purchased an originally thatched abode.

  • Beneath the snow-capped peak of Machapuchare (or Machhaphuchhare), otherwise known as the Fishtail, plus other peaks in this Himalayan Himal landscape, we see a group of Nepali locals chatting on low seats outside a home in the town of Pokhara, Nepal. The friends have a roughly-constructed dwelling that uses breeze bocks and concrete and we see a future attempt to make a first story extension. Machapuchare is revered by the local population as particularly sacred to the god Shiva and is therefore off limits to climbing. It’s at the end of a long spur ridge, coming south out of the main backbone of the Annapurna Himal, that forms the eastern boundary of the Annapurna Sanctuary and the peak is about 25km north of Pokhara, the main town of the region.

This was shot in The Great Smoky Mountain Park near Robbinsville NC, taken as part of a 2700 mile two week road trip from Atlanta Georgia through Tennessee and Mississippi to New Orleans. There is great feeling of freedom when you know you have two weeks away from work and responsibility and nothing but open road before you.

  • A bull Buffalo follows his cow at Specimin Ridge in Yellowstone National Park. The bull rarely leaves her side and sticks very close if another male is close by. These animals were once indiginous to this part of North America but were wiped out by the greed of white men. Now the Buffalo has been reintroduced into the Park, and continues to thrive under protection.
