  • A detail of the ornate sign hanging outside the Sailor's Reading Room on East Cliff, Southwold, Suffolk. Topless mermaids and a shell form part of the sign on a red brick wall of this Grade II listed Sailors' Reading Room, which still provides daily papers and a place to read them. Built in 1864 in memory of Captain Charles Rayley RN, a naval officer at the time of Trafalgar, the Reading Room was a refuge for fishermen and sailors. It provided a place to meet and receive religious instruction, away from the pubs, and somewhere to read things that were good for the soul. Displays of a seafaring nature line the walls and fill glass cabinets. Pictures and portraits of local fishermen and seascapes, model ships and maritime paraphernalia offer a fascinating history of Southwold’s connections with the sea.

  • Lenny the redcoat, entertains a waitress in the Lincon dining room, Butlins holiday camp, Skegness. The idea for the Red Coats came to Butlin early on in the Skegness Camps first season. He saw the first campers walking around looking bored and not making full use of the facilities. They had come to the camp looking for companionship and were not finding it. One of his assistants, Norman Bradford, started to jolly up proceedings by telling a few jokes to the campers assembled in the dining room. Butlin thought this was a good idea and the next day asked his colleague to go out and buy a distinctively coloured blazer - he did, in blue, primrose yellow and white, the camp colours. Butlin was not convinced and asked him instead to buy a red blazer. The Red Coats were then born. Butlins Skegness is a holiday camp located in Ingoldmells near Skegness in Lincolnshire. Sir William Butlin conceived of its creation based on his experiences at a Canadian summer camp in his youth and by observation of the actions of other holiday accommodation providers, both in seaside resort lodging houses and in earlier smaller holiday camps.

  • Two seats, three tape-recorders, a panic strip and a telephone are seen in the UK Border Agency's immigration detention room at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. Officers deal with members of the public whose passports, demeanour or travel habits have drawn attention to possible criminal activity while seeking entry into the United Kingdom. On average, 10 a day are refused entry here and between 2008 and 2009, 33,100 people were detained at the airport for mainly passport irregularities. The UK Border Agency is responsible for securing the United Kingdom borders and controlling migration in the UK. They manage border control enforcing immigration and customs regulations and consider applications for permission to enter the UK for citizenship and asylum. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Reflected in a mirrored wardrobe door, a Catholic Priest puts on his Alb before morning Mass in the church's private dressing backroom called the Sacristy (also called the Vestry) at St. Lawrence's Catholic church in Feltham, London. Using morning summer light from the window of his private dressing room, the Father (the more formal term for a Catholic priest by his congregation) is about to put the Alb over his head. The Alb is the white linen vestment with close fitting sleeves, reaching nearly to the ground and secured round the waist by a girdle (cincture). He is already wearing his Amice, an oblong linen cloth (at least 32 inches long and 24 wide), which is first placed upon the head and then brought down and drawn about the neck where it is fastened with cords. Originally it served as a head-covering for the priest.

  • Buddhists meditate in silence for 30 minutes in their Shrine Room at the Rivendell Buddhist Retreat Centre, England. A middle-aged man and a younger woman sit in a meditative cross-legged position in order to relax their bodies and free their minds for this period of inner-contemplation. In the middle on a polished parkay floor is a model of their retreat centre, a house now run by the Triratna Buddhist Community. Once a Victorian country rectory for the local vicar in this East Sussex village, it now houses facilities for the spiritual and the peaceful, having escaped for a brief time, the pressures of modern life. Beyond are two Buddhas on a tapestry and as a statue. The community web address is www.rivendellretreatcentre.com.
