  • Appearing Rooms fountains on the Southbank. During the summer months, outside the Royal Festival Hall you can play in these rooms created by walls of water. Danish artist Jeppe Hein's aquatic sculpture Appearing Rooms was originally commissioned for the garden of the Villa Manin, Italy. Inspired by the Baroque villa, he designed an ornamental fountain that combines sculpture, architecture, and technology and playfully invites visitors to interact with the changing spaces created by rising and falling walls of water.

  • Evening light from apartment rooms glowing on the rue Navarin, 9th Arrondissement, Paris, France. Seen from down the street in the district known affectionately as South Pigalle (aka "SoPi") we see the glow of house lights in a room 3 or 4 floors up from street level. There is no-one home or nobody seen in the flat. It's late and the shutters are either open or closed in the blue light of a Parisien evening.

  • Clive Steps facing St James Park on 16th April 2020 in London, United Kingdom. Normally crowded with people London is like a ghost town as workers stay home under lockdown during the Coronavirus pandemic. Major-General Robert Clive was one of the most controversial figures in all British military history. His achievements included establishing control over much of India, and laying the foundation of the entire British Raj, though he worked only as an agent of the East India Company, not the British government. For his methods and his self-aggrandisement he was vilified by his contemporaries in Britain, and put on trial before Parliament. Of special concern was that he amassed a personal fortune in India. Modern historians have criticised him for atrocities, for high taxes, and for the forced cultivation of crops which exacerbated famines. There was no inquest on his death and it was variously alleged he had stabbed himself or cut his throat with a penknife or had taken an overdose of opium, while a few newspapers reported his death as due to an apoplectic fit or stroke. Tucked on the right hand side is the entrance to the Cabinet War Rooms, a historic underground complex that housed a British government command centre throughout the Second World War. It is now a museum.

The man is reaching out to shake a colleague's hand before they all exit and re-convene elsewhere. Focus is on the room's name and not on the man, who remains anonymous. • A detail of the ornate sign hanging outside the Sailor's Reading Room on East Cliff, Southwold, Suffolk. Topless mermaids and a shell form part of the sign on a red brick wall of this Grade II listed Sailors' Reading Room, which still provides daily papers and a place to read them. Built in 1864 in memory of Captain Charles Rayley RN, a naval officer at the time of Trafalgar, the Reading Room was a refuge for fishermen and sailors. It provided a place to meet and receive religious instruction, away from the pubs, and somewhere to read things that were good for the soul. Displays of a seafaring nature line the walls and fill glass cabinets. Pictures and portraits of local fishermen and seascapes, model ships and maritime paraphernalia offer a fascinating history of Southwold’s connections with the sea.

  • Lenny the redcoat, entertains a waitress in the Lincon dining room, Butlins holiday camp, Skegness. The idea for the Red Coats came to Butlin early on in the Skegness Camps first season. He saw the first campers walking around looking bored and not making full use of the facilities. They had come to the camp looking for companionship and were not finding it. One of his assistants, Norman Bradford, started to jolly up proceedings by telling a few jokes to the campers assembled in the dining room. Butlin thought this was a good idea and the next day asked his colleague to go out and buy a distinctively coloured blazer - he did, in blue, primrose yellow and white, the camp colours. Butlin was not convinced and asked him instead to buy a red blazer. The Red Coats were then born. Butlins Skegness is a holiday camp located in Ingoldmells near Skegness in Lincolnshire. Sir William Butlin conceived of its creation based on his experiences at a Canadian summer camp in his youth and by observation of the actions of other holiday accommodation providers, both in seaside resort lodging houses and in earlier smaller holiday camps.
