  • Working in a dark corner of Desford Brickworks, the factory owned by Hanson Brick in Leicestershire, a labourer pats his clay aggregate into a clod (also known as a clot or warp) a lump of kneaded clay formed into a rough brick shape by hand in preparation for being thrown into the mould (or mold) and shaped once again with a stock. He will then skim off the surplus with the bow - a wire stretched between the ends of a curved wooden rod used for removing excess clay from the mould, which hangs on the wall by a nail. The stage afterwards is the firing in the kiln. Obviously the mechanisation of brick making endangers the careers of skilled craftsmen like this man. <br />
Bricks may be made from clay, shale, soft slate, calcium silicate, concrete, or shaped from quarried stone but Clay is the most common material.

  • As stormy waves crash over its super-structure and funnel, the Liberian-registered MV Braer oil tanker spills 84,700 tonnes of crude oil into the North Sea. It sits below its water-line with crude oil leaking from its ruptured tanks after running ground in hurricane force winds, beeching itself on these rocks in Quendale Bay, west of Sunburgh Head, the Shetland Islands, Scotland. In fast-fading light, this ecological disaster occured in a beautiful region of Great Britain affecting much native wildlife although the Gulfaks oil the Braer was carrying is lighter therefore more biodegradable and able to disperse better than other North Sea crude.

  • English Falmouth Estuary oysters have become highly sought-after around European restaurants and we see a freshly-caught specimen still in its shell after being landed from a traditional Falmouth antique working sail boat (fishing without mechanical power is a rule on this local fishery) that still dredge harvested oysters from the river bed using traditional methods unchanged since Victorian times. The fisherman's muddy fingers can be seen lifting (or shuck) the crustacean slightly from the shell with an old oyster knife to display this wild, native Fal oyster which is known for its distinctive sweet, fresh and delicate flavour.

  • David Reynolds (aka Eco) is a long-term activist, campaigner in the peace movement and resident of the Faslane Peace Camp, Scotland. His home of three years is called the Earth Shack and is largely re-cycled from scrap and garbage found locally on rubbish tips. Eco leans against his garden fence holding a mug of coffee this chilly Sunday morning. Signs of his political beliefs adorn the place: CND logos and Peace on Earth statements. His mother was a ‘Carnie’ (after the word Carnival, someone working on the fairgrounds) so perhaps it’s from her that he more enjoys an alternative outdoor camping lifestyle after a few years in the army. • A local man carries electric cabling uphill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With few roads that can transport supplies and raw materials up to remote foothill communities, the only way is often to carry what one needs on the back or by yak. The paths are even but often very steep in places so stamina and endurance are needed to get even modest weights uphill. Nepalis up here often want newer technology and basic electricity to power lights and showers although solar power is another answer.

While walking along the street near Trafalgar Square, the children of about 3 and 5 pause to glance sideways at the sleeping man with his hand outstretched, asking for loose change. This may be a shocking thing for the kids to see or possibly mildly interesting as they see many strange phenomena in Britain's capital. The latest annual figures show that 6,437 people were seen rough sleeping in London in 2012-13, compared with 5,768 the previous year, a 13% rise year on year and an increase of 62% since 2010-11.
