  • After heavy rain and the subsequent flooding, two lone canoeists paddle down the centre of the A27 near Chichester, West Sussex. The Dual carriageway has been completely submerged to approximately 1.5 metres and only the road sign with its directional arrow is visible above the surface which is rippling in a faint breeze. The men in red and yellow kayaks look inexperienced in boating activities and their clothing is not suitable for water sports. Even so, they are speeding down the highway that is otherwise empty of all other vehicles and they have the water and space to themselves without the fear of collision.

  • Police tape and a makeshift sign warn of a lane closure due to flooding in the village of Lavant, West Sussex. Afternoon sunshine illuminates the roughly-made board with red painted letters which says 'Road Closed'. The rippling water is less than a foot deep and we can see the broken white centre line beneath the surface but the linked posts that border the village green are also submerged. Even so, traffic is prohibited from passing through there for the risk of grounding or damaging engines. Lavant is a village just north of the city of Chichester. It is made up of two parts, Mid Lavant and East Lavant, and takes its name from the River Lavant which flows from East Dean. This area has been prone to flooding for several years and houses around the rising rivers can be blighted with insurance companies refusing future cover.

With the numbers of bus services listed vertically on the sign post, we look from a low angle, up at the information post, a blue efternoon sky and the rising spire of St Mary's, its shiny clock showing 5.30pm. A red London bus can be seen lower left too, en route to its destination elsewhere in the capital. TfL-sponsored operators run more than 500 services and the word bus is derived from the word Onmibus (the Latin for 'everyone').

Pausing from their fishing, the two men lean over the sea defence wall to watch the traffic to-and-fro as one giant vessel after another departs from Tilbury Docks towards open sea. The Thames has historically long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury remains a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world. There are 133 Hapag-Lloyd containerships with a capacity of around 499.000 TEU (Twenty foot containers), Container capacity exceeds 1,1 million (TEU) containers.

On the side of the vehicle's bodywork are the destinations the 38 route passes: Hackney, Dalston Junction, Angel, Piccadilly Circus and Victoria Station. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes. From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon.

  • The Hamburg-registered Mol Caledon ship passes the giant dredging machinery at npower's Tilbury power station on the River Thames northern shore, Essex England. Having just departed from Tilbury Docks with the evening sun glinting off the stern's reflective surfaces, stacks of tall containers are heaped high but evenly spread for stability along the massive vessel. They head out towards open sea, navigating through deeper water channels that naturally get shallower as silt chokes the waterways. Historically, the Thames has long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury remains a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world.

  • Limestone Way from Dudley, Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. The Limestone Way from Dudley to Sedgley is a route along four limestone hills: Castle Hill, Wren’s Nest, Hurst Hill and Sedgley Beacon. Mining and quarrying of the rock took place over centuries. The origin of the rocks lies over 400 million years ago in the Silurian period, creating an area of geological significance. The Dudley area, and much of the Midlands, was at that time covered by a shallow tropical sea. Gradually the shells of sea creatures settled on the lime rich mud of the sea floor. In time this mud became limestone whilst the shells were preserved as fossils.
