  • Despite a gloriously bright summer afternoon, we see a depressing corner of Southend-on-Sea's Adventure Island. A young couple sits on some white towels in front of a wall that is adorned with graffiti and has its paint rubbed away. It is a scene of squalor and desolation in a town that makes revenue from the day-tripper holiday market. Since Victorian times, many Londoners have traditionally come to this south-east coast on the Thames Estuary, close to the capital. Towns like this have seen a marked decline since the advent of the package tourism in favour of exotic beaches in Spain.

  • A closed and abandoned primary school playground in Oban, Scotland. At near ground level, we see across the broken surface of a play area where young children once played outside between lesson in this western Scottish town. Three palm trees have been painted on a wall beyond the overgrown plants grow between the cracks on concrete and roughly-made tarmac. It is a dystopian scene, one of hope and optimism and tropical optimism and decline and squalid reality.

  • A filthy alleyway in Toxteth, Liverpool amid socially-deprived streets and terraced housing. Graffiti of girls' names has been painted on to the brick wall of a tenement building but is now peeling off. Weeds have grown around the cobbled pavement and the windows are boarded up in a landscape of urban dereliction and social depravity.

  • Three dads are looking their respective children of varying ages - from a baby to an infant and 8-year old. In the foreground a father reads his tabloid newspaper as his toddler sleeps contentedly in its pushchair, a dummy in the mouth and a blanket scross its body to keep out a chilly breeze. Further back another man stands waiting for his partner with a baby, also asleep in the buggy. And thirdly, a male pushes his daughter in pink up a small slope on a bicycle that uses stablizers. It is a busy scene on Paignton seafront on the Devon coast. Elsewhere children and adults of all ages walk along the esplanade enjoying an overcast and windy day on holiday. This theatrical scene is about the ideal father and the family unit.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.

  • Beneath an ugly breeze block concrete wall, a couple are enjoying their holiday in the English seaside town of Paignton, Devon. Sitting in striped deckchairs they are both curiously touching their own genital areas between their legs, perhaps both scratching an itch. The lady in sunglasses wearing a floral dress on the left looks guilty while her topless male partner appears more amused by the interruption. In this depressing corner of Paignton, also called the English Riviera, the grey construction behind them is a grim reminder of what it is often like to holiday in one's own home country where few exotic luxuries are found. Such squalor is unfortunately common around the UK and a reason why people take their vacations abroad. Even the grass below them is bare with weeds growing and soil at the foot of the wall.

  • Closed down boarded up and run down, The Old Rose pub on The Highway in East London on 24th February 2020 in London, United Kingdom. Due to the economic downturn many pubs like this one are now boarded up. Other factors in the demise of some pubs are increased rental rates, lower disposable income and the smoking ban, while the trend towards wine drinking, and competition from off-licences and supermarkets has also hit pubs, especially those who concentrate on beer sales.

Indian slums are characterized as a run-down area of a city with substandard housing, squalor and lacking in security. They are home to increasing numbers of people and families who are usually very poor or socially disadvantaged. Most slums lack clean water, sanitation and other basic services, and as such they pose a serious threat to public health as infectious diseases are able to spread easily, such as Tuberculosis (TB) and cholera.

  • A middle-aged woman walks along a gloomy street in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • Digging work on the front at Southend-on-sea, Essex. The town could be described as run down as while there are some signs of affluence, these are few and far between. The predominant atmosphere is quite rough feeling and quite poor. Southend is a seaside resort that is very popular with people from the East side of London due to it's close proximity, just an hour away by train along the Thames Gateway. With the decline of seaside resorts, from the 1960s much of the centre was developed for commerce and many of the original features were destroyed through redevelopment or neglect.

  • Architectural optical illusion building with peculiar angles M By Montcalm London Shoreditch Tech City hotel near Old Street on 12th August 2020 in London, United Kingdom. East London Tech City, also known as Tech City and Silicon Roundabout, is the term for a technology cluster of high-tech companies located in Shoreditch and St Luke’s in East London. A cluster of web businesses initially developed around the Old Street Roundabout in 2008. The area had historically been relatively run down compared to the nearby City. The 2008–09 recession further suppressed rents through the closure of numerous firms, making it affordable to technology start-ups, while redundancies from financial services companies, such as investment banks, released a pool of experienced talent interested in entrepreneurship.
