  • Match officials at a Cartier polo tournament in Windsor Great Park, London. As time ticks on during the chukka, a scorer in a long white coat stands watching another as he checks his watch and listens to a transistor radio. We see that one team of the Prince Philip Trophy is Pendell Polo stables from Reading, England who have scored 3 points. Polo - from pulu in Hindi - referring to the wooden ball which was used, was adopted by the sport in its slow spread to the west. The first polo club was established in the town of Silchar in Assam, India, in 1834. It is also called "The Sport of Kings" and is a team sport played on horseback in which the objective is to score goals against an opposing team.

  • An Akha subsistence farmer scores opium poppies in an upland field in remote Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. After the petals fall from the opium poppy, the heads are incised with a 4 bladed tool; the tool is used to score the skin lightly from top to bottom. During the day, the sap oozes out of the cuts and hangs in tears on the poppy head. The next day the sap is then scraped into a metal container. As recently as 1998, Lao PDR was the third largest illicit opium poppy producer in the world. From 1998 to 2005, opium poppy cultivation in Lao PDR was reduced by 93 per cent. In more remote areas where cash crops are not viable, surveys from UNODC have shown that between 2008 and 2011 the area under opium poppy cultivation has doubled and continues to rise.

Leaping up to help win the ball that is about to be placed in the foreground basket, each of the seven boys try their utmost to help win or prevent the point, depending on the team members. • A solo teenage player takes a shot at the net on a basketball court at the Cyprea Marine Foods (CMF) processing factory on Himmafushi Island, Maldives in the Indian Ocean. It is dusk near the equator and soon dark. The landscape is barren except for some young trees on the waterfront where two people are walking in the cool tropical air. Seen in the last, darkening light of day, the player leaps upwards and his arm stays where his ball left his hand to roll around the ring. The man is enjoying some leisure time at the end of his working day, possibly an employee of CMF who handle newly-caught tuna fish for export to the EU and the UK's supermarket food industry.

  • Looking eastwards through 100 year old ash trees, a local game of cricket is played on the green grass of Ruskin Park, Lambeth overlooking the city. As the bowler comes in to deliver a fast ball to the waiting batsman, we see acrossto period Edwardian homes on the 1908 Ruskin Park. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on a field, at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. First played in southern England in the 16th century, one team bats, trying to score as many runs as possible while the other team bowls and fields, trying to dismiss the batsmen and thus limit the runs scored by the batting team. A run is scored by the striking batsman hitting the ball with his bat, running to the opposite end of the pitch and touching the crease there without being dismissed.

Shinty, or 'Camanachd' in Scottish, is a game only played mostly in the Highlands between teams representing villages and towns. The game is older than the recorded history of Scotland and is played on a grass pitch using a small ball and sticks (called a caman). Each team consists of twelve players and the game is played over two halves of 45 minutes. The the aim is to score goals only by using the caman. A ball hit over the sideline results in a 'shy'. To do a shy a player must throw the ball above his or her head and hit the ball with the caman directly over the head using both hands.
