  • An aerial view of a completely uninhabited, deserted island seen from a regional aircraft passing overhead atolls and islands, an hour's flying time north of Malé, capital of the Indian Ocean Republic of the Maldives. We see the perfectly clear blue sea surrounding a tiny flat island of white coral beach sand, ringing tropical vegetation and scrub that is in jeopardy to rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka.

  • A group of young boys play in the calm waters of the Indian Ocean on Meedu Island, in the Republic of the Maldives. The shallows are a safe playground for these kids who swim and splash about in the clear shallows next to two small dhoni boats often used to fish using traditional hand and line, an important source of income for remote communities in this island nation. The sea is perfectly clear blue and the sand coral-white, in jeopardy to rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. • A lone walker passes by a partially-collapsed broken sign announcing the summit of Rannoch Moor, Scotland UK, 1,350 feet above sea level. He is hunched against a driving wind at this altitude and the country he is walking over is bleak and boggy, a wetland high up in the Scottish Highlands. Thick tufts of grass and moss lie about in this tough terrain, held in great affection for long-distance hikers. Rannoch Moor is a large expanse of around 50 square miles (130 km²) of boggy moorland to the west of Loch Rannoch, in Perth and Kinross and Lochaber, Highland, partly northern Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Rannoch Moor is designated a National Heritage site.

  • 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations in Sri Lanka's Hill Country district of Nuwara Eliya, women tea pickers bend over trees to harvest Ceylon tea leaves that are taken to the white building on the left for processing. A carpet of velvety green tea bushes stretch into the far distance. This is the heart of the island's tea industry but was a pleasure retreat of the European planters due to its temperate English climate that produces the finest leaves for the country's economy. Teas from this highest region are described as the champagne of Ceylon teas. The leaf is gathered all year round but the finest teas are made from that plucked in January and February. The best teas of the area give a rich, golden, excellent quality liquor that is smooth, bright, and delicately perfumed.

  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth.

  • A solo teenage player takes a shot at the net on a basketball court at the Cyprea Marine Foods (CMF) processing factory on Himmafushi Island, Maldives in the Indian Ocean. It is dusk near the equator and soon dark. The landscape is barren except for some young trees on the waterfront where two people are walking in the cool tropical air. Seen in the last, darkening light of day, the player leaps upwards and his arm stays where his ball left his hand to roll around the ring. The man is enjoying some leisure time at the end of his working day, possibly an employee of CMF who handle newly-caught tuna fish for export to the EU and the UK's supermarket food industry.

  • A walker admires the view across the escarpment of Tennyson Downs on the Isle-of-Wight. Looking over his shoulder into the distance, the walker is alone on his solo pursuit along some of Britain's most beautiful coastlines, here on the south coast. The rolling downland stretches westwards - its white chalk cliffs famous for symbolising England's southern limits. Tennyson Down is a hill at the west end of the Isle of Wight just south of Totland. Tennyson Down is a grassy, whale-backed ridge of chalk which rises to 482 ft/147m above sea level. Tennyson Down is named after the poet Lord Tennyson who lived at nearby Farringford House for nearly 40 years. The poet used to walk on the down almost every day, saying that the air was worth 'sixpence a pint'.

  • A Metropolitan Police diver surfaces beneath the murky waters of the River Thames in front of the tall buildings of the City of London, England. Blowing bubbles, he exhales through his oxygenated mask and looks through the Plexiglass to the viewer. The Underwater and Confined Space Search Team (UCSST), are part of the Marine Support Unit and based at Wapping. They also carry out searches in canals, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. It was set up as a full time unit in 1964. One of their most distressing jobs, however, is recovering bodies from the River. On average over 50 people lose their lives in the Thames each year and about 80% of these are by suicide (usually by jumping off one of the many bridges that cross the Thames). After a body is recovered from the River it is taken to the mortuary at Wapping Police Station for identification.

  • Seaweed farm, Tamiao, Bantayan Island, The Philippines. The polystyrene floaters are important to keep the seaweed lines at water level to deter fish from eating the seaweed. Seaweed is fast growing and can be harvested in 1-2 months. The seaweed is then dried and sold to local buyers and a commercial processing plant in Cebu, where it is turned into powder; a high value product used by many industries including cosmetics and food. Before Typhoon Haiyan, Bantayan Island was the largest seaweed producer in Cebu province. The typhoon destroyed seaweed farms leaving over 2000 farmers without essential equipment and seedlings. Oxfam awarded cash grants to around 700 families to finance the purchase of seaweed seedlings and farming equipment including ropes, poles and floaters.

  • An aerial view looking down from a highpoint, on to the shallows and surf of waters near Lynton, Devon, England. Windsurfers traverse the windy seascape on a spring day on this south-western coast, one of England's warmest regions. Here, young surfers and ocean adventurers travel to these parts where the beaches are level and where the waves arrive at the coast in perfectly-formed breakers. In the picture, one surfer has fallen from their board, the sail now horizontal in the water. But the others are upright and travelling across the wind, expertly riding the waves.

  • Extinction Rebellion activists perform at the Marine Rebellion march on 6th September 2020 in London, United Kingdom. Ocean Rebellion, Sea Life Extinction, Animal Rebellion and Extinction Rebellion joined together to celebrate the biodiversity found in our seas, and to grieve at the destruction of the Earth’s oceans and marine life due to climate breakdown and human interference, and the loss of lives, homes and livelihoods from rising sea levels. Extinction Rebellion is a climate change group started in 2018 and has gained a huge following of people committed to peaceful protests. These protests are highlighting that the government is not doing enough to avoid catastrophic climate change and to demand the government take radical action to save the planet.
