  • Listening to an mp3 device, a man reads the Sports section of his newspaper on the top deck of a London bus. Listening to an mp3 device, a man reads the Sports section of his newspaper on the top deck of a London bus. Seated by the window of this double-decker, the man has wires from his music device protruding from his ears, listening perhaps to his favourite band or live radio as his commuting journey stops and starts in inner-city traffic. The word Sport can be seen at the top of this newspaper section and we have the idea that football is the subject that he is reading about. Another passenger sits in the row in front and she too appears to be reading, or sleeping. Affordable flats are in the distance outside.

  • A painted section of the old Berlin wall standing in a pedestrian precinct, near Checkpoint Charlie in central Berlin. The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the Communist German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany. In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period.

  • Security notice sign detailing the laws protecting Downing Street, the Prime Minister's address in Westminster London. Section 128 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 restricts those gaining access to this and other protected site. Barriers have been there since 1920 but in 1982 access was more fully restricted with railings and a demountable gate. This was replaced by the current black steel gates in 1989. The increase in security was again due to an increase in violence, particularly by the IRA but otherwise to street protests such as the Poll Tax riot in 1990.

  • A detailed view of a musician's hand delicately plucking the strings of his double bass. Our attention is on the architecture and parts of the bass: Its f-hole, the fingerboard, strings and bridge. The double bass, also called the string bass, upright bass, bass violin or contrabass, is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra. The double bass is a standard member of the string section of the symphony orchestra and smaller string ensembles in Western classical music. In addition, it is used in other genres such as jazz, 1950s-style blues and rock and rockabilly, traditional country music, bluegrass, tango and many types of folk music. The double bass is typically constructed from several types of wood, including maple for the back, spruce for the top, and ebony for the fingerboard.

It is demanding that more be done to tackle climate change and force politicians and the media 'tell the truth' about global warming.

  • Colourfully-painted sections of the old Berlin Wall are exhibited by local artists opposite the former Checkpoint Charlie, the former border between Communist East and West Berlin during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin.

  • Two US Navy helicopters have been parked next to some cacti at the Pima Air and Space Museum near Davis Monthan Air Force base, Tucson, Arizona. In the arid desert heat we see only the rear sections of the aircraft, their rotors have been moved into a storage position and so echo the arm-like form and camouflaged tones of the cactus branches. The ground is sandy from the desert floor and soft, overhead light casts a shadow beneath the aircraft's fuselage. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • An engineer working underground during construction of the Heathrow Express train project on behalf of Heathrow airport operator BAA (British Airport Authority), London England. While standing erect, he twists a high-tension tool that secures the concrete sleepers to the steel rails using a Pandrol Clip. The tunnel snakes its way into the distance behind him, lit by temporary lighting on the 5-mile tunnel wall. Its sections are reinforced concrete, shaped for the Heathrow Express electric Siemens-built trains that provide a direct link between Heathrow's terminals and Paddington station in central London. This is now the most expensive rail-mile fare in the UK at £15.50 for a 15-minute journey. In 1994 one tunnel collapsed without warning in one of the most catastrophic civil engineering disasters in British history.

At a time of social and political upheaval in the states and countries of the Middle-East, news is relished by those living and working in Europe, their favoured news outlets - in addition to online news - is a rich source of impartial reporting. • In mid-day heat of the arid Sonoran desert sit the remains of Boeing 747 airliners at the storage facility at Mojave, California. Here, the fate of the world’s retired civil airliners is decided by age or a cooling economy and are either cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium fuselages worth more than their sum total. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through their once-magnificant engineering. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • The nose detail of a de Havilland Comet in the colours of the long-defunct airline Dan Air is seen in profile at the Imperial War Museum's Duxford airfield, Cambridgeshire, England. The British de Havilland Comet first flew in July 1949 and is noted as the world's first commercial jet airliner as well as one of the first pressurized commercial aircraft. Early models suffered from catastrophic metal fatigue and the aircraft was redesigned. Here, the nose structure is held together with rivets that sit askew of the aircraft skin making it aerodynamically unfit to fly. It remains however, one of the classic and iconic designs in the history of commercial aviation. • Using ladders and ropes during a rescue operation, Fire Brigade crews enter the floodlit broken air frame of a British Midland Airways Boeing 737-400 series jet airliner which lies on an embankment of the M1 motorway at Kegworth, near East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire, England. On the night of 8th January 1989, flight 92 crashed due to the shutting down of the wrong, malfunctioning engine. Attempting an emergency landing, 47 people died and 74 people, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries. We see the aircraft's tail snapped upright at ninety degrees. Here perished most of the passenger fatalities. The devastation was hampered by woodland and the fire fighters are attempting to rescue survivors or extract those killed in this air disaster that proved one of Btitain's worst.

  • A holy Sadhu man attracts a crowd on the Maidan in central Calcutta, India. Near some ballustrades built by the British during the last years of the Raj, the man is leaning forward on his knees and his head is buried in gravel. Practicing Tapas or Niyamas, is one form of Austerity that holy men like this perform to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. It is a conservation of energy; an increase of power in the system by sense control; a process of positive-thought, self-imposed hardships and inner-strength - all to gain a higher being for oneself. They might stand in cold water in winter, stand on or bury their heads in earth. Niyamas also breeds non-violence, truthfullness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness, purity, contentment, discipline, study and surrender.
