• "Brave New World." On a maternity ward at Kings College Hospital, London, a tiny new-born baby girl sleeps in her cot at the foot of her mother's bed. We see the mum's legs and feet pointing towards some curtains against which her infant is wrapped in an NHS shawl to keep her snug and warm. But it's Summer and the bedding is ruffled at the bottom to keep the heat down for an exhausted mother comfortable in an otherwise airless room. It is a scene of serenity and safety, at a time when mother and baby are bonding. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

 • A young boy creates ripples as he plays with his radio-controlled boat in the River Thames at Dorchester, Oxfordshire. The sun is hidden behind a line of trees and the boy who is backlit stands in the shallow part of the river up to his ankles, wearing his swimming costume. The small boat is only a few feet from the antenna that controls its movement. It is a scene of idyllic tranquility, a childhood of happy summer days. Here the Thames is at its most serene, where visitors enjoy its shallows with the fear of strong currents, tides or large boating activity.

 • Reflection on the water of West Lake in Hangzhou, China, on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016. The lake, a popular and crowded tourist destination, saw a rare quiet day as the government shut the area down for tourists and residents alike for the G20 meeting held in the city, returning the lake to its serenity of the old days.

 • Skanderbeg Square, Tirana, rush hour 8am. The quiet serenity of this busy scene is because prior to 1991, it was illegal to own a car in Albania. There were, of course, a few automobiles running around but these were either driven by high communist officials or municipal employees.

In 1991 the Albanian government lifted the decades-old ban on private-vehicle ownership. Car imports numbered about 1,500 per month, and a black-market car lot began operating just behind the square. The number of cars in Albania has soared since the collapse of Communism, from 5,000 in the early Nineties, to over 500,000 today. Most are stolen from around Europe.

The population has more than doubled since 1990 and is now well over 700,000, fuelled by an influx of migrants from rural areas. The city is now choked with some 300,000 cars, lorries and buses which burn fuel banned in the EU and Over 35,000 tons of exhaust gases are annually expelled in the capital alone, 10 times the WHO limit. Tirana is now the most polluted capital in Europe.

 • As a cyclist pedals his way along a path, a man enjoys late afternoon sunshine in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London England. Seen from a central hill in this Victorian-designed open space, there are the terraced housing and larger tenement buildings behind that rise above the tree line in this undulating landscape. The person on the bicycle has been caught between two tree trunks as he approaches the man relaxing on the park bench and another pedestrian is seen further in the distance walking near a red car. It is scene of serenity among the urban sprawl of a capital city, where quiet places are precious and idyllic corners of greenery are highly-sought after. The Brockwell Hall Park Estate was created and landscaped in 1811. It was purchased for the people of Lambeth & Southwark and opened as a public park in 1892 by Lord Rosebery.
