  • With his back to the viewer, a young boy reads prayers and hymns in a local parish Catholic Church during his local Sunday service in Evreux, Normandy, France. Surrounded by members of his rural, French community the boy sits pretty much on his own, left alone to experience the congregation and the regular Mass of the Catholic church. The pews are wooden and old and in the distance we see the priest (Le Pretre) conducting the service with older people towards the front. It is estimated that 60% of France's population are Catholic, though much fewer are regular churchgoers. The church is organised into 98 dioceses, served by 20,523 priests.

  • The Corran Ferry that crosses on wintry evening on Inverscaddle Bay, Ardgour, Scotland. On a bleak and grey summer evening, with low clouds descending on surrounding hills and mountains, we see the still waters of this Scottish lake in the background. Two foot passengers who travel free stride down a ramp towards the waiting boat. Here, there is a sea crossing and the 10-minute Corran ferry service runs every 30 minutes from Corran to Ardgour, saving a round-trip of over 30 miles. So rurally-relaxed is the service that even if the ramp is raised, a late driver may still make the sailing.

  • The Virgin-sponsored HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) Explorer helicopter lands among trees in Ruskin Park, London. Used as a landing point for these helicopters has become increasingly important for head trauma patients needing to reach specialist medical teams at the nearby Kings College Hospital o Denmark Hill. As the aircraft slows and swoops its pilots put it down on empty ground to where an NHS ambulance can access the stretchered victim. London’s Air Ambulance is a registered charity that runs London’s only helicopter emergency medical service, serving the 10 million people who live, work and commute within the capital's M25 orbital motorway.

  • A P4 bus service destination Lewisham Station climbs Herne Hill early after fresh overnight snowfall in the south London area. During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. With its headlights on half-beam, the snow is still making this hill treacherous to climb as this heavy vehicle again starts from the bus stop, having lost its traction on the slippery road surface. A passenger alights, carefully stepping down from the bus onto the snowy kerb as other people walk uphill, preferring to make their own way. The snow rests on surrounding Victorian house roofs and in the distance; it is a bleak day in the misty urban light where high-rise flats (apartments) can be seen.
