  • Fallen Ionic and Doric columns lay in the undergrowth at Olympia, Peloponnese, Greece. The 29th modern Olympic circus came home to Greece in 2004 and in the birthplace of athletics and the Olympic ideal, amid the woodland of ancient Olympia where for 1,100 continuous years, the ancients held their pagan festival of sport and debauchery here. These fluted columns that date to about 400BC that now lie in the shade were originally piled on top of each other to construct - among other buildings too - the Temple of Zeus. There, the athletes made offerings to Nike, the Goddess of Victory before going out to compete in the many sports. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now.

  • At the famous Butlins holiday camp in the Somerset town of Minehead, a poolside lifeguard overlooks the main pool from an overhead bridge. Behind him a monorail transports holidaymakers around the resort. Wearing the large letter B for Butlins on his red vest, the young lad sucks on his whistle held between his lips and prominently, the words 'Made in England' have been tattooed on his left shoulder - as if a statement for his patriotic ideals but also for those of Butlins - an institution for the British working classes who after the war had the opportunity to spend their summers at special resorts in seaside towns that provided entertainment and fun. Butlins and other camp businesses went into decline when the masses preferred Spanish vacations but have since been revived as travel costs have again soared and holidays at home are once again popular.

  • A very smart young man of afro-Caribbean descent wears a quintessentially English summer straw hat, cravat and pinstriped blazer during a hot afternoon at the Henley Royal Regatta boat races, England. He stands with the hat shading his dark-skinned face from a sun, while chatting to unseen friends. He appears to be a student at an English university – Oxford or Cambridge – and is here to take in the social scene at this famous boating event on the River Thames. In 1829 a boat race challenge was held between teams representing the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The venue chosen was a straight stretch of the Thames at the small town of Henley-on-Thames. Now held July and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season for the hoi polloi.

  • Girl tourists in similar clothing outside Basillica di San Marco in Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy. The wide expanse of Piazza San Marco is in the heart of Venice and where, for most daylight hours, the pavement is crowded with humanity as the influx of tourists who, in their own way, flood the narrow streets with sun-shading umbrellas and the smaller canals with gondolas. Venice attracts 22-million visitors each year (for a city of only about 60,000 residents) while the cultural protection organisation, Italian Nostra, warns that Venice can only accommodate about 33,000 visitors per day but currently at least 60,000 daily.
