  • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The cruise line calls its ships The Fun Ships and the MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. • A portrait of three brothers of the same family have their picture taken outside their parents' home in Westcliff, England. The eldest is a teenager of approximately 17 and is holding his youngest brother who is still only 12 months-old. The third boy is biting his lip while looking to the viewer, more anxiously than the other two. He is possibly 14 but both the elder lads wear identically-designed jumpers that cut across the throat to allow their clean white shirts and ties to remain visible. Apart from the young child, the elders share the same dark hair colour but genetically, they share one chromosome that has given them heavy eyebrows, a family trait. This was taken on Kodachrome film stock in the spring of 1961 so the look and feel of the image is dated with wonderfully muted colours that this Kodak film offered to consumers in the early 60s.

  • The fishing fleet of Tarbert on Scotland's Mull of Kintyre lies moored at the dock of this pretty coastal village in the Western Isles. Their colourful hulls shine in late afternoon sunshine as they are tied up awaiting another outing at sea to provide for this small fishing community a living and a livelihood for its families. But in the foreground sit a young couple whose prospects are not so positive: they rest on a bench in silhouette, one smoking a cigarette while turned to the friend who stares out to distant rolling hills. It is a scene of hopelessness that reflects modern life for the youth in remote communities where jobs are scarce and their futures far from secure. In an otherwise idyllic Scottish landscape, we guess at the disintegration of society up here - the scourge of economic downturn and future social problems.

  • At the height of financial uncertainty, we see from a low pavement angle investors queueing outside the Maddox Street branch of the troubled Northern Rock Bank, off Regent Street, Mayfair, in September 2007. Their hard-earned savings appear to be in jeopardy after the bank announced an emergency loan from the Bank of England. Despite reassurances from officials who insisted that the Bank which has £113bn in assets, was not in danger of going bust, concerned men and women wait in line, some with their faces on view and reading newspapers or more commonly, wishing to remain anonymous and keeping their backs to reporters and cameras. The rush of customers demanding their investments almost spelled the demise of the bank with over £2bn removed from accounts in a few days. Northern Rock struggled since money markets seized up over the summer.

  • Two men sleep in summer sunshine, sharing a bench in the pedestrian area of Spitalfields in central London. Surrounded by the plate glass architecture of this otherwise ancient London landmark (dated to the Roman and Saxon era) the men enjoy a much-needed rest during a warm afternoon in the metropolis, taking a few moments to recoup some much-needed energy.

  • Large ladies and child in Trafalgar Square, London. We see across the busy tourist location in the capital to the crowds on steps and on the wall of the fountains - most prominently is the large backside of a woman leaning on stonework, her denim jeans tight across her posterior. A young girl sits alongside - perhaps sharing the same family genes.

  • MD902 Explorer helicopter from the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust takes-off beneath commercial airliner overhead after emergency flight to Kings College Hospital in south London. Sharing airspace with both general and commercial aviation, the HEMS helicopters that service the capital need to be under control of local air traffic rules and regulations, making for a safe environment for different aircraft to operate in - separated by set altitude distances. They may appear to be close but scale and perspective makes it look closer than they actually are. (KSSAAT) fly state of the art Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) aircraft operating 365 days a year, out of their base at Marden in Kent and Redhill in Surrey. They're capable of delivering our crews anywhere in our region in 20 minutes flying time, attending over 20,000 missions

  • While two mates in tartan uniform trousers look a little bashfully, a more forward friend from the same Scots regiment soldier chats to two young women during 50th anniversary celebrations of wartime VE Day. Bending down to make himself heard and perhaps to impress the two rather posh females into sharing their phone numbers. They are in Hyde Park to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved.

  • A group of attractive young ladies sit together in a train compartment. They are all on their way from London's Waterloo mainline station to Royal Ascot in Berkshire for Ladies Day during the Royal Ascot racing week. Wearing their best clobber and obligatory headwear for the posh event, the seated females are dressed in summer skirts and tops, in readiness for a warm day at the races. Sharing a joke and with plastic glasses filled with champagne from a bottle that one has been serving from, the 7 women are in good spirits in their private first class compartment that has a number 1 on the outside door. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • Woman walking up the steps at Six Dogs a trendy outdoor bar in the Monastiraki area. six d.o.g.s is a day & night cultural entertainment center at the heart of Athens (Monastiraki), which organically combines each one of its elements: a Project Space (non-profit space for presenting visual art projects and other likewise one-off events), a Bar, a Café, a Gig Space for hosting live gigs, theatrical performances, bazaars, workshops, talks, screenings, and educational programs, and a vivid 600m2 Back-Garden. six d.o.g.s is not introduced as a new space, but rather, as a new model for a space. It is suggested as a space which aims at creating a high-profile dynamic nucleus of cross-genre activities right in the heart of the Historic Center, initialized by an equally dynamic experienced group of young art professionals, aiming at being both avant-garde and pop, sharing similar qualities. Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. It dominates the Attica periphery and is one of the world's oldest cities, as its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy.
