One wears a bright red and gold costume with feathers just off the road while another wears a dancer's sequined leotard. Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance.

  • An outdoor exhibition panel showing a dead prisoner during the Todesmarsch (Death March) from Sachsenhausen concentration camp at the end of WW2, now known as the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum. Sachsenhausen was a Nazi and Soviet concentration camp in Oranienburg, 35 kilometres (22 miles) north of Berlin, Germany, used primarily for political prisoners from 1936 to the end of the Third Reich in May 1945. After World War II, when Oranienburg was in the Soviet Occupation Zone, the structure was used as an NKVD special camp until 1950. Executions took place at Sachsenhausen, especially of Soviet prisoners of war. 30,000 inmates died there from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition, pneumonia, etc. The remaining buildings and grounds are now open to the public as a museum.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • "First ladies." A six month-old infant girl has a shocked look on her face as she plays with a copy of the broadsheet Guardian newspaper whose front page headline photograph is of Hilary Clinton, then First Lady of the United States. Clinton is also looking aghast at something she is experiencing. Coincidentally, the President's wife and the first-born of this family are both first ladies. The child has sunk down into her high-chair, reacting to something her mother has said. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. • An urban north European fox lies dead in a south London road after being killed by a local vehicle. With a fatal injury to its head, the animal has died the previous night in the gutter of a quiet road in the London borough of Lambeth. Its reddish fur and especially its tail - known as the brush - are otherwise unaffected and so may have succumbed to shock rather than major trauma. It is an adult, rather than a cub and will have been missed by its local den. 'Vulpes vulpes' has a long history of association with humans, having been extensively hunted as a pest and furbearer for many centuries, as well as being represented in human folklore and mythology. Because of its widespread distribution and large population, the red fox is one of the most important furbearing animals harvested for the fur trade.

The £18.2m bridge, central London's first new river crossing (from tate Modern to St Paul's Cathedral) for more than a century, was opened on 10 June 2000 but was shut three days later because of what engineers called the "synchronised footfall" - the swaying effect of hundreds of people stepping in unison. 91 dampers similar to shock absorbers were fitted allowing its re-opening in early 2002. We see here hundreds of visitors to the Bankside walking north and south across this convenient piece of engineering. Coincidentally, they walk on the same right side as drivers in the UK. Two businessmen walk closest to the viewer but elsewhere people look like tourists and pleasure-seekers.

Bonfire night is an annual English tradition that takes across Engliand, especially in rural towns and villages such as Kington, a farming community on the English/Welsh border. The tradition is to light a bonfire with a guy on top historically, an effigy of Guy Fawkes, the Catholic plotter against King James 1, in 1605 although nowadays, the effigy can be of any hate character. This year, it was of Donald Trump - a few days before his shock election victory. Soon afterwards, the fireworks display was under way.

  • A closed DVD rental shop in south London has gone bust, a victim of the UK's economic climate. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

  • Sharline Dagou, 24, was a secretary at a restaurant in Petion-Ville, she poses with her mother and brother outside her house. "I was in my bedroom with my family when the quake struck. "The first shock was smaller like a preview of the next one. The door was blocked, but we pushed and got out but my younger brother was caught. When we came out we saw our houses destroyed. Now we have nothing. I even lost my shoes and have been barefoot for the last three weeks. Most of the families who lost people have left, they cannot bare to stay. We pray to cope with our sadness. A Dominican missionary came to give us courage, he told us we have to accept because we love God. "I often cry, but I still smile as well. We have to, we have to hope for the future. Where there is life there is hope."

  • Children stare at sleeping homeless man in central London doorway. While walking along the street near Trafalgar Square, the children of about 3 and 5 pause to glance sideways at the sleeping man with his hand outstretched, asking for loose change. This may be a shocking thing for the kids to see or possibly mildly interesting as they see many strange phenomena in Britain's capital. The latest annual figures show that 6,437 people were seen rough sleeping in London in 2012-13, compared with 5,768 the previous year, a 13% rise year on year and an increase of 62% since 2010-11.

  • The Earl Haig Memorial is a bronze equestrian statue of the British Western Front commander Douglas Haig photographed on a deserted Whiehall during the coronavirus pandemic on the 10th May 2020 in London, United Kingdom. The shocking casualties and repeated battlefield failures of the First World War led to widespread criticism of its senior commanders. Of all the Allied generals, Haig was the most censured due to his unrelenting faith in the offensive and the huge losses incurred by imperial forces as a result.
