  • Facing the viewer and from slightly above head height with a long lens, we see a massed crowd of men and women with hands raised in agreement at taking industrial action. These people are English Liverpool council workers recently made redundant and have gathered in the city centre to express their willingness to act againist their former-employers. It is a unanimous decision and all are in agreement with everyone's hands - some higher than others - defiantly up in the air.

  • Three young British Asians pose in the street to show their gangland signs in Southall, west London. "Throwing up" a gang sign (e.g., "Stacking," "walk") with the hands is one of the most known and obvious forms of "claiming." It is used in many situations where other identifiers may not be possible or appropriate, and it can also show that a gang member is in the area to "do business" as opposed to just passing through. Usually these signs are made by formation of the fingers on one or both hands to make some sort of symbol or letter.

  • On the edge of an old Soviet parade ground, peeling murals show the physical style of Russian marching techniques seen in this army boot camp in the former East German peninsular called Halbinsel Wustrow near Rostock. For the benefit of recruits or as a reminder of Soviet discipline, the picture shows soldiers marching in that unmistakable goose-stepping style reminiscent of the Nazi era, with high forward kicks and a strenuous arm movement to the chest as seen in iconic May Day celebrations in Red Square. Wustrow was once a WW2 German anti-aircraft artillery position then housed civilian refugees before the eventual Soviet occupation of the former DDR during the Cold War, up until 1990 and the fall of communism and the Berlin Wall. The camp was ransacked and all its assets stripped before its desertion that summer and is a reminder of a fallen ideology

  • The Lady of Justice statue atop The Central Criminal Court in England, commonly known as the Old Bailey from the street in which it stands, is a court building in central London, one of a number of buildings housing the Crown Court. The Crown Court sitting at the Central Criminal Court deals with major criminal cases from Greater London and, in exceptional cases, from other parts of England and Wales.<br />

On the dome above the court stands a bronze statue of Lady Justice, executed by British sculptor F. W. Pomeroy. She holds a sword in her right hand and the scales of justice in her left. The statue is popularly supposed to show blind Justice; however, the figure is not blindfolded: the courthouse brochures explain that this is because Lady Justice was originally not blindfolded, and because her “maidenly form” is supposed to guarantee her impartiality which renders the blindfold redundant.

But this is a circus act from the Archaos troupe, a french company of oerformers who tour the world with their anarchic version of big top entertainment. With a dark background and with the apparent murderer wearing black, it is an image of raw, homocidal thuggery: A massacre and attack on another human being. Despite it being a pretence, an act for the sake of an audience with a thirst for the macabre, it is still very disturbing.

She dramatically stamps her foot and raises her arms in a Juerga an informal, spontaneous gathering where dancing, singing, palmas (hand clapping), or simply pounding in rhythm are enjoyed. Grown out of the fusion of Arabic, Andalusian, Sephardic, and Gypsy cultures traditional flamenco artists simply learned by listening and watching relatives, friends and neighbours. It adapts to the local talent, instrumentation and mood of the audience. Seville holds its annual fair in rows of temporary marquee casetas, hosting families and friends which begin during the April Fair two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

It is a chilly night and the boy's breath is seen against the frosty night air. His graffiti art has taken him some hours to spray on this white wall and shows a glossy finish. The picture is anonymous because of the young man's face is unseen and generic, because we don't see where the wall might be located.
