Sacked by a Scots army after the battle of Shaws Moor in 1322, it was destroyed in the Dissolution of abbeys and monasteries by Henry VIII in 1538; the buildings then became ruinous and a source of building stone for local people.

  • Tourists' warning sign embedded in lava rock at the dormant crater edge of Vesuvius volcano. Telling visitors not to climb over fences and endanger their lives, the sign shows an exclamation mark. Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. That eruption ejected a cloud of stones, ash and fumes to a height of 33 km (20.5 mi), spewing molten rock and pulverized pumice at the rate of 1.5 million tons per second. From the chapter entitled 'Under the Volcano' and from the book 'Risk Wise: Nine Everyday Adventures' by Polly Morland (Allianz, The School of Life, Profile Books, 2015).

  • Swinging A-frame sign outside the Trussell Trust’s Kingston Foodbank, Kingston, United Kingdom. The sign directs people to the foodbank which provides emergency food to local people. Two men are waiting outside the foodbank to receive their free food box which will contain basic non-perishable food for three days. In 2012-13 foodbanks fed 346,992 people nationwide. Of those helped, 126,889 were children. This form is used by a Trussell volunteer when preparing a food box for an adult. • The cross on the wall of Herne Hill's United Reform Church and the direction sign post (plus its shadow) of Red Post Hill, south London. Echoed by a low winter sun, we see the three repeating crosses as a visual pun, a joke of three same shapes but with different meanings. The exterior of this church is from the 1970s period of architecture but the red post is a recent addition, instigated by locals to return the original landmark for this road junction, a marker for walkers and horses on old byways, paths and tracks going back many hundreds of years. On the post we see that Brixton is one mile away and the neighbouring areas of Herne Hill and Tulse Hill and Sydenham are close too.
