  • City workers enjoy a lunchtime siesta in summer sunshine under solid Corinthian pillars of the Royal Exchange in City of London. With his tie askew and loosened around his neck, a successful businessman sits on a bench below the war memorial and tall pillars of this Victorian market building in the heart of London’s financial district. Alongside is an older, less prosperous man whose rumpled coat gives us the sense that he might be less accomplished than the younger gentleman. There is a heat wave in the capital and officer workers have come out into the sunshine to unwind and snatch a quick sleep in parks and open spaces. The neo-Romanesque Royal Exchange building also has Doric and Ionic columns with their ornate stonework, strong lintels with carvings featuring the design by Sir William Tite in 1842-1844 and opened in 1844 by Queen Victoria.

  • A holiday couple sleep on portable beds in a particularly shabby corner of Bournemouth, a seaside resort in southern England. Above them are posters for this seedy part of the seaside resort on the south coast. Stars appearing in the summer season are an Elvis impersonator and the comedians Joe Longthorne and Les Dawson, who is appearing in Ray Cooney’s show called “Run For Your Wife!” The couple lie on their fold-up chairs, stretched out in a quiet corner below peeling plaster walls and beside a chained-up stack of deck chairs. The scene is a quintessentially English resort town that many from the 60s and 70s recall, when the Spanish package holiday suddenly became more attractive options, than the domestic week at home.

  • A man sleeps in mid-afternoon sunshine on the steps of Royal Exchange opposite the Bank of England in the City of London, taking a nap in the heart of the capital’s financial district. A red double-decker Routemaster bus has stopped in a queue of traffic opposite with an advert for London buses saying ‘We’ve got to get this city to work’ but with tattoos on his arms and his forehead and wearing heavy army-style boots, he is clearly not on his way to a job and therefore out-of-place in this busy part of London. With arms folded and head resting on an unseasonal coat, the man is asleep and going nowhere.
