  • Four office workers are outside their place of employment in central London for a quick cigarette break. Puffing guiltily on their fags that have sought a dark place on the pavement beneath some shelter although it is warm enough for two of the men to wear only shirts and ties while the only lady present is in a jumper. One member of the group draws heavily on his cigarette, a sign of his addiction and enjoyment of taking a five or ten-minute pause from his office job. • Bride arrives for her wedding in a vintage Rolls Royce, making her entrance via the 'Goods entrance' at the Connaught Rooms in central London, UK. For such a well to do wedding this dirty back street, which is normally used as a 'smokers corner' provides a huge contract to the bride in her white satin dress and guests in their expensive dresses. They all seemed very happy to be arriving through the back door though, as the atmosphere was one of laughter and smiles.

  • A gentleman dressed in a pin-stripe suit favoured by older workers in England, exhales the smoke from a fat cigar during a lunch-hour in Trinity Square in the City of London. The man is overweight and leads an unhealthy lifestyle, his chin overlapping his striped shirt. The cigar is held at the tips of two fingers and we can see in profile the billowing of a smoky cloud from the man's lips. Government statistics suggest that in 2001, 27% of adults aged 16 and over smoked cigarettes in England; 28% of men and 25% of women. 66% of smokers in England wanted to give up smoking but more than 120,000 deaths were caused by smoking in the UK in 1995; that is, one in five of all deaths.

  • Three models pose in a market square near Budapest, two holding advertising merchandising for Marlboro Lights, a promotion for those recently emerging from the former Communist to taste the delights of this western cigarette. The US tobacco company Philip Morris manufactures this brand and after the fall of the Berlin Wall, those living in former eastern-bloc nations created a vast new market that opened up potential income for the ambitious cigarette industry - just as it has in China and African countries. In this town square, people pass-by and sit in cafes before the three women take their product to the masses, handing out free cigarettes to tempt smokers and perhaps future smokers.

  • Cigarettes for sale at a supermarket. Currently laws allow for cigarette packets to be put on display in shops. This will change in the coming years to ban these displays first from supermarkets, and then from smaller shops in an attempt to stop the temptation especially to younger smokers.
