  • The solitary figure of a man stands on the roof of an office building in downtown Atlanta during a victory parade for the city's baseball team. The man may be a security guard, keeping watch over the streets below as crowds gather to honour the Atlanta Braves Baseball team, after their 1995 World Series win. The figure is in his manmade environment and the high walls and windows of the buildings that make up this metropolis dwarf this tiny human who in the scale and perspective of a modern city looks incongruous, isolated and insignificant.

  • An early morning regular swimmer swims solitary lengths at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido before crowds arrive. After a 6.30am summer opening time, this Londoner likes to escape the crowds and unwind during a warm spell of weather and before another day of city heat. She swims many lengths of breast stroke (American crawl) in the chilly waters of this unheated pool. The Lido is a magnet, an oasis, for city dwellers to escape, if only for an hour from the pressures of fast urban life. Many enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends. In the centre, a mother helps her young daughter up from the cool morning water before another hot day in August. Brockwell Lido is a large, open-air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994.

  • A rather obese woman stands in the waves at the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. With hands behind her back and fingers interlocked the lady wears a turquoise bathing costume that just about fits her ample, wide body. Her bottom is large as are her legs that have cellulite on the tops of her thighs. She looks left alone, a solitary person standing with her back to the viewer - or perhaps she is standing guard, keeping watch on children as they play safely in the sea. Water splashes against her lower legs and is frozen still by a fast shutter speed. It is a fine, bright sunny afternoon on this Eastern coast of England, more noted for very changeable weather rather than the heatwave experienced here.

  • The last light of day fades on the still waters of Sgeir Nam Biast, a bay overlooking Waternish Headland, near Dunvegan, north-west Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. A solitary light bulb glows from an upstairs room in this isolated cottage across the calm lake. The weather is perfect but unusual for one of the wildest parts of Britain. Farming practices have changed irreversably in a generation and many residents have English accents rather than that of native Scots islanders as city dwellers from the far south seek an alternative to urban lifestyles. The weather can have adverse effects on those unprepared for such wild conditions, especially during harsh winters when violent storms batter these Atlantic coasts. But old crofts have been converted to bed and breakfast homes, catering for tourist visitors who adore this form of idyllic escapism.<br />

  • As a summer sun sets behind evening clouds, there is a moment of peace for a solitary man, silhouetted while seated on bench in the cemetery of the Holy Rude Church in Stirling, Scotland. Taking a while to collect his thoughts, to consider aspects of a troubled life or simply to think spiritual meanings, the man has found tranquillity and inner-strength from this beauty spot, a mound overlooking the headstones and graves of Scottish nobility.

  • A wide landscape of dereliction and poverty during the early 1990s in the city of Liverpool, England. The Liver building is seen in the far distance as a symbol of the city centre beyond an empty street up which a solitary man walks his dog. Empty buildings await destruction after the terraced housing has long been razed to the ground in the 1960s - the impoverished population having moved out for a better life elsewhere.

  • An eleven year-old girl swings with head thrown backwards in a field in Herefordshire, England. It is an image of care-free youth, of a free-spirit and without a care in the world. The young lady gazes skyward as the swing takes her on an upward trajectory, the sun sinking behind distant trees, a scene of splendid inner-peace and tranquillity, disturbed only by the creaking of the rope on the tree above that supports her as she rides. She is staying at this small camp site where tipis and yurts is the theme of this eco-friendly and carbon-neutral holiday.

Sewn onto the traveller's rucksack, the countries represented by these patches show a much-travelled young person who has amassed a collection of world air miles and travel experiences, with their national flags and emblems on display in a way that adventurers show their routes and wanderlust to others, perhaps as proof of a lifetime wandering the world's borders and airports. As each badge is added, it accounts for new travel companions and the hazards and joys of modern air travel. • A Buddhist man on silent retreat in a private cabin at the Rivendell Buddhist Retreat Centre, East Sussex, England. As the last light from a summer's day fades into night, the cabin (a converted garden shed), the practicing Buddhist stands against the internal lamp light, pausing to think and contemplate about his life and its meaning. Long grass from a private meadow is for the sole use of someone in retreat, a period of a few days or perhaps a week, separated from the pressures of modern life. Rivendell was once a Victorian country rectory for the local vicar in this East Sussex village, it now houses facilities for the spiritual and the peaceful, having escaped for a brief time, the pressures of modern life. Beyond are two Buddhas on a tapestry and as a statue. The community web address is www.rivendellretreatcentre.com.

  • In fine, late-summer weather, an eleven year-old girl gingerly steps over a stile on the coastal path at Carregwastad Point, near Strumble Head, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Steadying herself with a walking pole, she climbs over wearing trainers rather than stout walking boots as this path is gentle for younger outdoor enthusiasts. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is the first National Trail in Wales. Opened in 1970, the path is almost entirely contained within the boundaries of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park that takes in 17 Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSI), two nature reserves, and Wales' only marine nature reserve. The cliff tops offer wonderful expanses of wildflowers in Spring (April and May are best). Wide variety of birds nest along the cliffs, and grey seals can often be seen in the water below.

  • A young boy creates ripples as he plays with his radio-controlled boat in the River Thames at Dorchester, Oxfordshire. The sun is hidden behind a line of trees and the boy who is backlit stands in the shallow part of the river up to his ankles, wearing his swimming costume. The small boat is only a few feet from the antenna that controls its movement. It is a scene of idyllic tranquility, a childhood of happy summer days. Here the Thames is at its most serene, where visitors enjoy its shallows with the fear of strong currents, tides or large boating activity.

Oddly, the contours of the structure have been inverted to reveal an inside-out version of the original building. It is a concrete cast of the inside of an entire Victorian terraced house completed in autumn 1993 and exhibited at the location of the original property — 193 Grove Road — in East London (all the houses in the street had earlier been knocked down by the council). It won Whiteread the Turner Prize (the first woman to do so) for best young British artist in 1993. Here we see 'House' at a close distance with graffiti painted on the walls stating the words "Wot for ..why not!" before it was controversially demolished by the council in January 1994.
