  • Located about 90 minutes by boat from Krabi Town, Phi Phi Ley, the smaller of the Phi Phi Islands contains a large cave, Tham Phraya Nak or The Viking Cave, Thailand. The cave is home to vast numbers of swifts. Their nests, an essential ingredient in the Chinese gourmet dish Birds Nest soup, are collected by locals from a series of rickety bamboo ladders. It was once possible to enter this cave but now, due to the precious nature of the birds nests, this is impossible. These special nests command prices which makes them more valuable than gold.

  • Tinned can Sainsbury’s chunky soup beef and vegetable placed on a table with other non-perishable food in the Trussell Trust Kingston foodbank, England, United Kingdom.  The food has been donated to the foodbank through schools, churches and individuals.  In 2012-13 foodbanks fed 346,992 people nationwide. Of those helped, 126,889 were children.  In response to the Government cuts to welfare, foodbanks have experienced a significant increase in demand and in September 2013, Kingston foodbank provided food for their 5,000th person.  The emergency food supplies are organised by volunteers who use a checklist to prepare each food-box.

  • A fish head waits on a steel tray to sell at Xiang Yang wet market, just off Shanghai's busy main shopping district. It will probably go towards a fish head soup, a common classic. The body will have been bought as the prime cut. Fish are kept alive and only killed at the last moment to stay fresh. This fish will have been trying to gasp after being separated from it's body.

  • Ricardo Simeone, centre, from Ferret, Port Au Prince queues outside Muncheez restaurant to get a hot meal. Ricardo  was trying to get out of the house as the earthquake hit but was not quick enough. The house fell on him, he lost the tip of his fingers but he hasn't lost anybody. He is homeless, however and camping in Saint Pierre, and very pleased to be getting a daily meal at Muncheez. He queues every day for three or four hours. Gilbert Bailey, owner of Muncheez, who has been running the soup kitchen since the day after the earthquake was one of the few Haitians not to be directly affected and wants to give back.  He feeds one thousand Haitians every day.  He says, People can contribute directly themselves , search face book under "Muncheez Food Drive Haiti".

  • Using a cloth, a waiter picks up a hot bowl of Butter Squash soup ready for a la carte service in the kitchens at the Vivre restaurant in Sofitel, a 605 bedroom, 27 suite and 45 meeting room accommodation and business hub Heathrow Airport's hub hotel attached to Terminal 5. A stack of clean and unused plates are ready for use on the hot plate that warms them  and we see the waiter leaning over in shadow, carefully taking hold of the bowl so that none of the liquid spills.
