  • Ground source heat pump, a sustainable source of energy. Llanerchaeron, Wales, UK. Used for heating Llanerchaeron House - a Welsh property of The National Trust. The National Trust have combined efficiency measures and sustainable heating technologies to reduce energy use. As well as cutting down on energy use it has also installed renewable sources of energy, including solar PV and hydro power. Ground source heat pumps, like the one shown here, draw heat from deep in the earth to transform into electricity or keep as heat.

  • A parked Smart car recharges electric power at an EDF charging point in central London. Its yellow coiled cable stretching from charging point to car. Source London is now the capital’s largest charging network. It has significantly boosted existing numbers of charge points operated by a range of different localised schemes. By 2013, Source London will total at least 1,300 charge points, more than the number of petrol stations currently in London, ensuring the infrastructure is in place for significantly more people and businesses to buy an electric vehicle. The creation of an electric vehicle network is in line with the Mayor’s pledge to promote quality of life by reducing pollution and CO2 emissions.

  • An ostrich chick stands alone in a private pen, beneath a heat lamp at the ostrich farm belonging to Robert and Nina Bailey near Chepstow, Wales. The reddish glow from the heat source concentrates life-giving energy into the young bird, helping it survive the first three months after hatching. Rearing these birds is a specialist and very expensive business but Ostrich meat is a South African delicacy, used for Biltong. Nutritionists promote it as a more healthy alternative because it is higher in protein and lower in fat and cholesterol. An ostrich lays an egg every other day, of which 40 to 80% are fertile. In the wild there is a 95% failure rate but using an incubator like this almost guarantees total success. Its latin name, 'Struthio camelus', is the largest of living birds with some males reaching a height of 8 ft (244 cm) and weighing 200 to 300 lb (90-135 kg). In the wild, the polygamous male has from two to six females in his flock. The cock scoops out a hollow for the eggs, which weigh nearly 3 lb (1.35 kg) each. One of the females incubates the eggs during the day, and the cock takes over at night. On the savannah they can run at 40mph (64 kph) for 10 hours though their top speed can reach 80mph. During the 19th-century vogue for ostrich plumes, farms were established in South Africa and later in North America, Australia, and Europe; after World War I fashions changed and the industry collapsed.

  • Van Gogh as a Banksi-like criminal by artist Mr Brainwash, an adaptation on Norman Rockwell at the old sorting office in new Oxford Street, London. The reference is from a 1943 Norman Rockwell poster promoting the purchase of war bonds to "save freedom of speech" during World War II; image depicts several town's people seated in a school class room for a meeting as a male stands in audience attempting to speak set against a large black board located in the background. Mr. Brainwash is the moniker of Los Angeles-based filmmaker and Pop artist Thierry Guetta.

  • Making their way across a field, alongside a hedge, and away from a collection homes a mother and her two children walk from the direction of massive chimneys and cooling towers. The instillation in the distance is the Sellafield. Formerly known as Windscale, Sellafield (operated by Sellafield Ltd) is a nuclear processing and former electricity generating site, close to the village of Seascale on the coast of the Irish Sea in Cumbria, England. The site has been the subject of much controversy because of discharges of radioactive material into the sea, mainly accidental but some alleged to have been deliberate. 1983 was the year of the ‘Beach Discharge Incident’ in which high radioactive discharges containing ruthenium and rhodium 106, both beta-emitting isotopes, resulted in the closure of a beach. BNFL received a fine of £10,000 for this discharge.

  • As evening light fades, bright light from the electricity-hungry Canary Wharf docklands development is supplied by the voltage from electricity cables and supporting struts at West Ham sub-station, Canning Town, London England. A network of 110 miles of cables have stretched across 542 'L6' pylons across England's Kent countryside, from the coal-fired power station at Dungeness to this location, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of London's high supply demands. Insatiable appetites for energy means electricity is now an expensive comodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.

  • The outline of electricity cables stretch across a gloomy winter sky in woodland near Wrington, North Somerset England. Diagonally, the cables travel across the picture but they are part of a line of L6 pylons that have already crossed many miles of South-West England's countryside, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of Bristol's high supply demands. In the foreground we see the bare boughs and branches of trees creating a Sci-Fi scene of ugly 21st technology versus the beauty of nature. Insatiable appetites for raw power and energy means electricity is now an expensive comodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.

  • School children eat their morning porridge before lessons commence.<br />
It is school policy that all the children wear their uniform; not only does it make the children immediately identifiable, and everyone in community knows where a child comes from and belongs, but it also safeguards against child trafficking. The Uniforms are made affordable, as they are sourced locally. They can also be subsidised, in exchange for parental involvement, for children from poorer homes. It is a good a way of getting the support of the community and for all children to be equal at school.

  • Displayed in the window of a traditional Chinese medicine shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, are the labels and plastic bags containing some of the 500 Chinese herbs that are in use today in Eastern herbal remedies, of which 250 or so are very commonly used in the treatment of ailments and diseases. Rather than being prescribed individually, single herbs are combined into formulas designed to adapt to specific needs of individual patients. Herbal formulas contain from 3 to 25 herbs or animal parts, some sourced from endangered species. As with diet therapy, each herb has one or more of the five flavours/functions and one of five "temperatures" ("Qi") (hot, warm, neutral, cool, cold). After the herbalist determines the energetic temperature and functional state of the patient's body, they prescribe a mixture of herbs tailored to balance disharmony.
