  • A class of schoolboys accompanied by their teachers play on the shingle at the water's edge in the south coast seaside town of Brighton. The East Pier is resplendent with amusement rides and attractions that populate its long structure, jutting out into the calm English Channel beyond which is the French coast further south. The children are still in their school shirts, shorts and ties but have taken off their shoes and socks to frolic and enjoy some precious fresh-air and the freedom that childhood brings. According to British legal requirements, schoolchildren on away day visits must have accompanying adults with a ratio of 1:xx though it appears this group's quota is less with two teachers per 28 boys.

  • A walker admires the view across the escarpment of Tennyson Downs on the Isle-of-Wight. Looking over his shoulder into the distance, the walker is alone on his solo pursuit along some of Britain's most beautiful coastlines, here on the south coast. The rolling downland stretches westwards - its white chalk cliffs famous for symbolising England's southern limits. Tennyson Down is a hill at the west end of the Isle of Wight just south of Totland. Tennyson Down is a grassy, whale-backed ridge of chalk which rises to 482 ft/147m above sea level. Tennyson Down is named after the poet Lord Tennyson who lived at nearby Farringford House for nearly 40 years. The poet used to walk on the down almost every day, saying that the air was worth 'sixpence a pint'.

  • Vespa scooter on display on Brighton's seafront esplanade on Bank Holiday weekend. Fitted to the frame of the bike are many headlights and mirrors that is the cultural ephemera of the British mod subculture of the 1960-70s. Focused on music and fashion, mods have their roots in a small group of London-based stylish young men in the late 1950s who were termed modernists because they listened to modern jazz. Traditionally they gathered at seaside towns on the south coast, like Brighton where clashes with Rockers was a Bank Holiday weekend tradition.

  • A couple of mixed-race have put their heads through the apertures made in a painting that depicts Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, on the Palace Pier at Brighton, on the south coast of England. The faces peep through this traditional attraction that few can resist, even in the 21st century. The man’s face looks disturbingly incongruous in the place where the Prince Consort’s white German character would be. There is a message here of a changing multi-cultural British society where these friends or partners are from other ethnic backgrounds and where mixed-marriages are now commonplace, as opposed to the Victorian era when attitudes to racism and race-relations were vastly different.

  • Four water-logged deckchairs have been abandoned on a wet Brighton's East Pier in East Sussex. It is Spring but the rain has driven away holidaymakers from this desolate and depressing spot from England's South coast seaside resort. We see a gloomy, grey sky and empty horizon with neither people, nor water activity but the stripes of the railings are echoed in the reflective wooden planks on this Victorian-era pier and of the fabric on the deckchairs. We wonder who might have sat on these chairs and where they might be now? This landscape might be the antithesis of a holiday poster that repels rather than attracts tourists to this location.

  • A pink-coloured parasol blows in the wind on a seafront during the winter off-season. Looking miserable and wintry, the landscape shows us the grim weather of a grey day on England's south coast - except perhaps, for the bright colours of the umbrella which blows on a sea breeze. The six-seater of a bench is empty too, as visitors to this area have yet to return to the promenades and pavements of this East Sussex coastal resort.

  • A walking couple rest on a bench at Morte Point on the North Devon Coast. Gazing out to see in the direction of South Wales straight ahead or out to the Atlantic to the right, they sit in peace on a calm summers day. Green grasses carpet the rocks on this clifftop location, a favourite of coastal trekkers and outdoor enthusiasts. Owned by the National Trust, Morte Point is a spectacular headland on the North Devon coast behind the village of Mortehoe near Woolacombe. The treacherous reefs and strong currents at the point, have caused numerous shipwrecks.
