  • Sprayed parking notice on the ground in a City of London side street. As a polite message asking taxi drivers not to park on this spot, the unknown person wants this location kept clear between certain hours - something one driver has chosen to ignore because it is a place for cabs to pick up fares beneath the newest of London's skyscrapers, known as the Walkie Talkie in the heart of the capital's financial district aka The Square Mile. The green lines and lettering looks prominent but seems to be ineffective as a means of asking for clear space.

  • A sprayed Cross of St Andrew flag of Scotland flies across the wall and shutter of a closed bar in south Glasgow's Goven Hill. The Flag of Scotland, (Scottish Gaelic: Bratach nàiseanta na h-Alba, Scots: Banner o Scotland), also known as Saint Andrew's Cross or the Saltire, is the national flag of Scotland. The earliest reference to the Saint Andrew's Cross as a flag is to be found in the Vienna Book of Hours, circa 1503, where a white saltire is depicted with a red background. In the case of Scotland, use of a blue background for the Saint Andrew's Cross is said to date from at least the 15th century

  • Graffiti has been sprayed in red with aerosol on the wall of an estate agent in Herne Hill, South London England. "Homes for the Homeless, not Yuppies" it reads along with the Anarchists' Circle-A symbol, meaning that housing should be made available for families needing a roof over their heads, rather than overpricing properties for the middle-classes buying for profit and investment. We see the writing on the wall beneath pictures in windows of houses and flats in the SE24 area where prices are posted along with details of the buildings. The house-buying market climbs according to demand in areas of the city such as this, forcing up values which are out of reach to ordinary, working people unable to climb the property ladder.

  • Childrens' toilet gender signs risk averse playground called The Land on Plas Madoc Estate, Ruabon, Wrexham, Wales. The words Boys and Girls have been sprayed on to the doors of an old sea container that acts now as a toilet. Young people are encouraged to push their personal limits in a way that parents are nowadays scared to allow. But here in this council play park, children are encouraged to experiment with risk aversion, to enjoy a wilder form of play and interaction with others - the opposite of online relations and over safe childhoods. From the chapter entitled 'Playing with Fire' from the book 'Risk Wise: Nine Everyday Adventures' by Polly Morland (Allianz, The School of Life, Profile Books, 2015).

  • Sprayed marks on the outside wall of an industrial estate, marked for redevelopment in Loughborough Junction, a site for regeneration and gentrification of luxury flats in the south London borough of Lambeth. Criss-crossed over the brick wall are the aerosol markings to show a future demolition crew where to cut through this outer boundary. The gentrification process is spreading across many London boroughs, erasing industrial property, the home of small businesses and trades like carpentry - in favour of exclusive homes that command large deposits and rents that local Londoners cannot afford.

  • The words Good as Gold are written on the top of a Victorian building in Southwark, south London. With blue sky and clouds above, we see an urban street message sprayed on the former warehouse near Waterloo. “Good as gold” or “as good as gold” are common English expressions meaning something is genuine or reliable. Referring to people, particularly children, they usually mean well behaved. “Good as gold” is one of numerous figures of speech involving gold as a desirable standard of some kind. The expression is a simile, an analogy used to describe something by comparing it to something else. The word “gold” itself is one of the oldest words in the English language.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, an American flag has been sprayed with aerosol paint on a grassy knoll by a local garage owner near Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as America sought to express their emotions and a unity. A spotlight shines across the bank to show passing motorists the creative stars and stripes artwork on the roadside. • Sprayed writing on a closed recession business window. The words 'Last Day Closing .. any reasonable offers'. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

  • Graffiti sprayed on a rendered brick wall proclaims that a higher authority ‘Can’t evict our ideas’. This message of resistance by the underdogs of a moral majority appears on a part of wasteland in the Yorkshire city of Bradford, where the residents of an estate near the city centre have been forcibly removed to make space for a new development. Before their migration, the anonymous, downtrodden people were desperate enough to write this piece of anarchical philosophy that might be seen as a metaphor for a class war against the establishment by The People; the working classes otherwise known in Marxist ideology, as the Proletariat – a kind of thought from the (Orwellian) novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell.

  • Ducking under the falling spray from a giant wave, a passer-by experience the force of nature from a storm off the coasts of southern England - here at the Port of Dover, Kent. As the water hits the sea defence wall, the seaside town is battered by southerly winds that bring with them huge breakers across the promenade. Adventurous and foolhardy people brave these conditions and stay for as long as possible at the railings then jump out at the last moment before getting doused in salt spray. This man carries on walking and thinks that by bending down, the sea will pass overhead.

  • Sinister silhouettes in an underpass tunnel with walls covered with urban graffiti. The tunnel is located near Waterloo mainline station and the concrete bunker-like place has become a favourite landscape for dedicated street artists who are free to cover the walls and pavements (sidewalks) with expressions of their urban artistic ideology and political protest. In daytime, this environment is not as intimidating as it appears and Londoners pass through as a shortcut beneath an otherwise complex route of roadways and railway tracks above. There are also periodic festivals of street art attracting the best of artists including the secretive Banksy.

  • A Muslim man walks past street art on a wall near Brick Lane, London. The local man walks down the street passing bags of purple recycling bags which match the same colour of the urban mural - an artistic aerosol representation of a face. This is a scene of traditional Islamic culture living alongside a different ethnicity in the capital's eastern area, from the 1970s, a largely Bangladeshi community along Brick Lane. Today, it is the heart of the city's Bangladeshi-Sylheti community and is known to some as Banglatown.

We see his partially-obscured face lit from behind with a strong amount of flash which throws a well-defined shadow of his hand holding a spray can. It is a chilly night and the boy's breath is seen against the frosty night air. His graffiti art has taken him some hours to spray on this white wall and shows a glossy finish. The picture is anonymous because of the young man's face is unseen and generic, because we don't see where the wall might be located.
