  • In a narrow street in Florence, a parking attendant stops to check the windscreen (windshield) of a Fiat 500 car. Squeezed into a space that only a car of this length can occupy, the lady warden bends to inspect the owner's city permit. Traffic police in Florence issue approximately 90 tickets every minute, 1,253 tickets a day so a motorist in Florence receives a traffic violation every 40 seconds, according to official figures. Ticket fines average about 140 euro per motorist bringing about 52 million to city hall each year, making it one of Italy's most heaviest fined cities. Officials note that the money entering the municipal budget through traffic fines has tripled in the last 10 years. The Fiat 500 (Cinquecento) designed by Dante Giacosa was produced by Fiat between 1957 and 1975.

  • Looking down from a high viewpoint, prospective auction bidders take notes from their catalogues of old red British Telecom (BT) pay phone boxes which are lined up on display in their hundreds before the actual sale starts. The 'lots' are squeezed together along pathways allowing customers to thoroughly inspect their potential purchases' details. This is a wide-angle picture taken on the slant with the distant boxes curling around to the left. One man in blue who has opened the stiff-opening door, cranes his neck to look up into the ceiling of these solid cast-iron frames. The K-series kiosks were largely designed in 1936 by the iconic designer Giles Gilbert Scott.

  • Seen from an office block high vantage point, thousands of commuters pour northwards over London Bridge against the direction of queueing buses and cars. It is a scene about the transient business community and mass transport. The working population arrives early for work over the bridge in the City of London's historic financial district. We see the sunlit faces of those walking towards the viewer which echo the red tail lights of the stationary vehicles. So gridlocked is the traffic on the southbound carriageway, there is a lone cyclist stuck and squeezed between the curb and a double-decker bus. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England.

Graffiti has been scrawled on what was the main entrance doorway to the now vacant building on Lordship Lane, south London. As part of government economic austerity cuts, East Dulwich station has been closed and local crimes and law enforcement, dealt with at nearby Brixton and Peckham, some miles away. The community's anger to losing their local police is one example of how everyday hardships are being squeezed by the absence of healthy spending in the public sector, including the closures of libraries and many healthcare services.

The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. • Flight Lieutenant Dan Simmons of the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, zips up his g-pants before climbing into his Hawk jet. G-pants counteract the effects of high gravity stresses that jet-fighters impose on the human body, automatically inflating and squeezing blood back to the thorax and head when blood drains towards the legs. As he attaches the zipper, he rests his straight right leg on a retractable step which helps him and his ground crew engineers to gain access to the cockpit, high above the ground. Hanging from another part of his airplane is his life-vest which he will wear around his neck, whilst in flight. Flight Lieutenant Simmons wears heavy-duty black boots which are regulation footwear for flying personnel and dressed in his red flying suit that is famous around the world.
