  • Black taxi drivers protest against taxi service app Uber, blocking Waterloo. Joined in many numbers by future black cab drivers on mopeds currently doing The Knowledge. London cabbies emphasised that they had no problem with Uber, only with Transport for London for not enforcing current legislation. Taxi drivers say the Uber app is tantamount to a meter and should be regulated like taxi meters. Uber says it has seen an 850% increase in sign-ups compared to last Wednesday and describes the London Taxi Drivers Association LTDA, as being stuck in the dark ages.London, England, United Kingdom.

  • The A30 highway runs deep into the South-West of England - from Exeter in the county of Devon to Penzance in the narrow peninsular of Cornwall. On certain dates in the calendar routes like this, near the Cornish town of Bodmin, England, come to a standstill from the huge volume of cars and private vehicles, all heading down to costal resorts and better weather. We see here a huge tailback of traffic that is queueing along one side of the British dual-carriageway (two lanes in each direction) from close-up to the distance down and up a natural hill in this undulating landscape. The cars have edged forward are nose to tail for hours in summer heatwave and tempers fray, children arguing in the back and an otherwise relaxed holiday mood suddenly goes bad.

  • The first mass anti-communist protests took place in July 1990, forcing the regime into some cosmetic changes in economic policy. It was in vain: shortages of spare parts, aging machinery, drought and growing unrest brought the economy to a standstill. By the year's end, after strong student and trade union protests, the regime was forced to accept a multiparty system. Hoxha's gilded statue in Skanderbeg Square, Tirana, was torn down by rioters on February 20, 1991.

  • From a slightly raised viewpoint we are looking up Bishopsgate Street in the oldest area of Britain's capital, the Square Mile in the City of London. As traffic is at a standstill when lights are red, pedestrians to and fro across the scene, blurring as they negotiate crossings and traffic islands mid-way across this old Roman and medieval highway that travels north-south in what is now the city's financial district. Buses can be seen in the far distance too adding to the general bustle of a busy metropolis. The highway tends to zigzag into the distance and with the foreshortening of a long lens, appears to have a compressed perspective.

  • One shovel-full of road grit has been left in a small pile at the kerb of a side road in East Dulwich, South London. Left by workers from the borough of Southwark, this modest supply is symbolic of the controversial problem of local government running low on street grits and salts that help prevent thousands of traffic collisions and pedestrian falls every winter. In January of 2010 (following the equally snow fall of February 2009) councils were caught unprepared for adverse weather which virtually brought towns and cities and rural communities to a standstill. We look down at the fallen snow, trodden by countless pairs of boots which compress the snow and make it an often treacherous surface on which to tread.
