  • Steel bars sit in an idle steel stock yard in Shanghai, China on 06 January 2010. China's central Banking governor Zhou Xiaochuan warned yesterday that industrial overcapacity could "pose a risk to the quality of bank loans." Even so, China will continue its "moderately loose" monetary policy. Some critics say that China's stimulus package, which has been much credited for leading the world out of a recession, had been used mainly to create more capacity in industries such as steel and manufacturing, which in turn will further put pressure on the world economy. Already this year the U.S. has slapped additional duties of 43 to 289 percent on imports of more than $300 million worth of a steel product from China.

  • It is 10.15 in the morning and a mother and her daughter have crossed a road in Ruda Slaska, Poland, while an older lady has paused on the zebra crossing. It is a dark and gloomy day in this heavily polluted, industrial town in southern Poland. The local employer is the Huta Pokoj SA steel mill that dominates the landscape, rising as a filthy tower that makes the air quality so poor that respiratory deceases are common, with soot present in the atmosphere for children to breathe. The environmental impact of 1990s post-Stalinist Polish heavy industry is evident. The day is damp, depressing and unhealthy with a truck's headlights on as pedestrians stand on the roadside, wait at the bus stop or cycle past on the pavement.

  • Children play near a puddle in the town of Nova Huta. In filthy industrial streets, the kids look undernourished in this scene of impoverished, Communist dereliction. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen reflected in the puddle before them. After the war, Stalin decided to build an industrial Communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nowa Huta - or, the new steel mill. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area.

  • Lone pigeon perched on a girder on the underside of a railway bridge in south London. Seen from the top deck of a London bus, we see the lone bird with its head poking out from its steel nest, the strip light from the bus' interior make a diagonal line across the scene. The Bridge serves a commuter railway through the capital at Elephant & Castle in Southwark. The girders look weathered from seeping water above and the pigeon's habitat resembled that of an urban tree viewpoint.

  • We are looking down from above to office and business workers who are lying down and relaxing in the grass in their lunch break at Finsbury Circus, a circular green park space in the heart of London's financial district, the City of London. Surrounding them is an art instillation of steel sheep that are incongruously grazing among the assorted people, much like they once did when London was a home to livestock en-route to market and other animals used for transport. It is a warm afternoon and in the foreground, a man wearing a dark suit has taken off his polished shoes and is lying his head on his jacket in the warm afternoon, loosening his tight tie and stretching his neck. Elsewhere, a lady is sitting eating a packed lunch with the Sun newspaper and a man a little further behind is in jeans and plimsoll shoes. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • Children play in a desolate street in the town of Nova Huta. Amid the filthy walls of their tenement building home and of the grim, car less street beyond, two older children play in their doorway while younger friends peer from around a corner. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen st the end of the street. After the war, Stalin decided to build an ideological communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nova Huta. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area.

  • Seen from the inside looking outwards, we see one of the giant 38 ton 'torso nodes' of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 roof structure. Developed by Arup to design the geometry of abutment steel, this engineering challenge needed to help support 50 ton rafters to made T5 the largest free-standing building in the UK. In the centre is the torso that sits on top of two feet with the wings splaying out to the window. The main architecture was created by the Richard Rogers Partnership (now Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners) and opened in 2008 after a cost of £4.3 billion. Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

The Royal Parks and the Serpentine Gallery presented a major exhibition of large- scale outdoor sculptures by acclaimed London-based artist Anish Kapoor in Kensington Gardens. The free exhibition showcased a series of major recent works never before shown together in London. Constructed from highly reflective stainless steel, the giant curved mirror surfaces will create illusory distortions of the surroundings and will be visible across large distances, creating new vistas in this famous and much-loved setting. The sculptures were sited to contrast and reflect the changing colours, foliage and weather in Kensington Gardens.
