  • Sprayed with aerosol and stencil on the pavement (sidewalk) in a Manhattan street near New York City’s Armory are the words "WTC RIP 9.11.2001" As if in recognition of the attacks on the World Trade Center that occured four days previously, pedestrians pass-by leaving dark, haunted shadows on the pavement as if suffering the horrors of what many witnessed on September 11th. A young girl is about to walk over the stencil and we see her US stars and stripes bandana wrapped around her head looking like the tv super-hero Wonder Woman.

Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'. s

  • In the 24hrs that a further 38 died from Coronavirus, bringing the total to 41,736, a further easing of the UK’s Covid pandemic lockdown restrictions took place with many high street shops today being allowed to re-open after three months of forced closure. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wanting to stimulate the economy, has urged people to shop with confidence and long queues formed outside the main brands. But unlike on public transport, face coverings are not compulsory so shop floors and shopping practices have had to be adapted to ensure customers’ social distances, amid fears of a second infection wave. • Looking down from a person's height, we see two Pitbull dogs standing quietly on a south London street pavement. The two animals seem docile but are attached to leads held by an unknown owner. AT the dogs' feet in a stencilled sign that Lambeth, the local council has left at many locations of its streets where dog owners neglect to collect their pets' mess. Their idea was to paint the words "Bag it. Bin it" to help educate this unhygienic practice. Britain's Dangerous Dogs Act bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog - pit bull terriers, Japanese Tosas, the Dogo Argentinos, and the Fila Brasileiros. Under the act, a dog classed as being "dangerously out of control in a public place" can be destroyed. The owner can be fined and imprisoned for up to six months. If a dog injures someone, the owner can be jailed for up to two years.

  • This black and white scene is in a City of London side street where a bicycle parked on a parking pole at a kerbside has somehow fallen over in the gutter. Fittingly, the parking bay is for specifically for a disabled motorist and that word has been stencilled in bold white lettering on the wet road surface after a rain shower. The pavement and tarmac glisten making it slippery but the bike has been left and there is no-one in this scene. Reflected inn the puddle is the modern architecture of the office building, also seen rising from street level.

  • A motorbike rider has pushed aside other scooters and inserted his own bike into a tight parking space in Westminster, central London. Squashing together the scooter belonging to other commuters, this male worker has shoved them along to make way for his own vehicle. The word Motorcycles has been stencilled onto the road to mark the correct bay in the street reserved for only this type of bike meaning space is tight as the number of bikes in the capital's congestion zone has increased. Across Westminster there are approx 6150 spaces for motorcycles on street. Some of these spaces also have security devices for you to secure your motorcycle to.

This local authority once provided for free, up to three bags per household purely for the use of garden and plant material instead of it going to landfill. But in the era of government and economic cuts, this is one service now charged for in 2011. The stenciled lettering tells home owners that only organic waste should be put in before a fortnightly collection from the street outside.

Source London is now the capital’s largest charging network. It has significantly boosted existing numbers of charge points operated by a range of different localised schemes. By 2013, Source London will total at least 1,300 charge points, more than the number of petrol stations currently in London, ensuring the infrastructure is in place for significantly more people and businesses to buy an electric vehicle. The creation of an electric vehicle network is in line with the Mayor’s pledge to promote quality of life by reducing pollution and CO2 emissions.

During a time-exposure and partially-lit by the headlights and spotlights of an airfield emergency vehicle, we see the giant numbers 27 that landing pilots will see from a mile away as they descend towards the airport's threshold. The numbers relate to the compass bearing that the line of the runway takes: In this case 270 degrees from north and has a parallel southern twin. Across the number two we also see a set of taxiway lights that help the steering pilot navigate across the airfield and line-up on the departing runway. <br />

  • Abandoned and derelict premises at the rear of a former garden centre business, due soon for redevelopment. On the ground are the words "Sous les paves, la plage" - in the French language. This roughly translates as 'under the pavement, the beach', a clue to the land's former use as a garden and plant centre followed by a pop-up artists' studio. The property is now vacant, awaiting development for a future library, apartments and small supermarket. Blue panelled fencing borders the premises and faded yellow breeze blocks separate weeds.

  • A parked Smart car recharges electric power at an EDF charging point in central London. Its yellow coiled cable stretching from charging point to car.

  • Royal wedding graffiti shows the Queen using an aerosol to spray Prince William and Kate Middleton in a heart. Seen ion a street in central London, it is not known if the author of the artwork is Banksy, the subversive, underground and anonymous street artist or another wannabe or copycat. In the weeks before the royal wedding event gripped a largely negative public in terms of anti-royalism, the royal theme seemed to be everywhere, with flags and memorabilia on sale everywhere.

  • A Queue Here sign on the road at the Corran Ferry crossing on Inverscaddle Bay, Ardgour, Scotland. On a bleak and grey summer evening, with low clouds descending on surrounding hills and mountains, we see the still waters of this Scottish lake in the background. A stone wall separates the waters from the A861 road that circles this Highland region, from Moidart to nearby Fort William. Here, there is a sea crossing and the 10 minute Corran ferry service runs every 30 minutes from Corran to Ardgour, saving a round-trip of over 30 miles. Motorists are asked to queue (line) up and await the ferry to accept passengers.

  • Dollar, Euro and Pound signs in a former Bureau de Change's window, central London. As if a ghostly shadow of their former values, the logos of American, European and British currencies are seen through the glass of the former exchange shop on Piccadilly in the West End. The detail view is symbolic of the UK recession and the falling prices of world money markets. These three western curencies are seen as fading entities compared to the Asian currencies.

The identifying names of the Boeing type range such as 777s, 767, 747 and 757s are also stencilled on the apron concrete to allow exact distances for expandable air bridges and other airfield vehicles to connect and service these differing-sized commercial airliners. The pilot has devices inside and outside to gauge the exact spot to break to a standstill though these marks are largely unsighted to them, high up in the cockpit.
