  • Four friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Bare except for their costumes, they stretch and yawn, read a newspaper and lean against a railing all the while swapping anecdotes and complaining grumpily about the state of the world near a brick wall that retains heat. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • A Parachute Regiment recruit is in mid-flight and leaps across a wide space between scaffolding and a rope net during the 14-week long Pegasus (P) Company selection programme. Seen in silhouette, the man is in full stretch, half-way between the gantry he leapt from and the rope net that he is about to meet. It is an image that describes a mid-point, a half-way position between safety and uncertainty. Known as the Trainasium, it is an 'Aerial Confidence Course' which is unique to P Company. In order to assess his suitability for military parachuting, the Trainasium tests a candiates ability to overcome fear and carry out simple activities and instructions at a height above ground level. Recruits wanting to join the British Army's Parachute Regiment held regularly at Catterick army barracks, Yorkshire, need to pass this and other tests before earning the right to wear the esteemed maroon beret.

  • The outline of electricity cables stretch across a gloomy winter sky in woodland near Wrington, North Somerset England. Diagonally, the cables travel across the picture but they are part of a line of L6 pylons that have already crossed many miles of South-West England's countryside, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of Bristol's high supply demands. In the foreground we see the bare boughs and branches of trees creating a Sci-Fi scene of ugly 21st technology versus the beauty of nature. Insatiable appetites for raw power and energy means electricity is now an expensive comodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.

  • It is mid-day on the narrow stretch of river, green lilly pads float on its surface and in unbder a fierce sun overhead, three young men are lazily making their way to the viewer in a rowing boat on the River Thames near the village of Shillingford, England. The young male in the middle is the one rowing and he pulls on one oar to steer around an unseen obstacle in the absolutely calm, clear blue waters of this majestic river whose source rises in deepest Gloucestershire to its industrial estuary in the English Channel 215 miles (346 km) away. But here in Oxfordshire, we see an idyllic scene of adventure and peace on calm rural waters in a beautiful and tranquil setting, on an English midsummer day. 'Three men in a Boat' published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford.

  • From an aerial perspective, we look down on the green algae and a lone rower who is sculling upstream of the River Lea (Also Lee) in east London, England. The words No Fishing have been painted by hand on a old Victorian lock that once served as a navigable route for barges to negotiate this inner-city waterway. With its source in the Chiltern Hills and ending in the River Thames, this stretch of river has seen development from Saxon times through to the building of the 2012 Olympic site at Stratford. Meticulously placing his oars in the water, he parts the organic growth with the slim boat's hull and looks over his shoulder to check his distance and angle as he nears the lock’s concrete spans.

It is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

The Serpentine Lake is situated in Hyde Park, London’s largest central open space. The Serpentine Swimming Club was formed in 1864 ‘to promote the healthful habit of bathing in open water throughout the year’. Its headquarters were beneath an old elm tree on the south side of the lake, a wooden bench for clothing being the only facility. At this time London was undergoing rapid expansion and Hyde Park was now in the centre of a densely populated built up area and provided a place of relaxation to its urbanised masses. Now, the club has its own (somewhat spartan) changing facilities and members are permitted by the Royal Parks to swim in the lake any morning before 09:30. They race every Saturday morning throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

  • Facing a setting sun, the near-exhausted rowers of a small ‘jolly boat’ has almost completed the long Great River Race by pulling their oars along 22 miles of the River Thames. About to row past the battleship HMS Belfast on the right and under Tower Bridge beyond, the four friends negotiate the choppy waters of the capital’s river. The Great River Race (also known as 'London's River Marathon') attracts both the true racer and the leisure rower. The course from Richmond to London docklands was inspired by the immense interest generated by a 1987 charity event in which the famous Doggett's Coat & Badge winners from The Company of Watermen & Lightermen rowed its shallop, or passenger barge, from Hampton Court to The Tower of London.

  • Wearing numbered bibs, four Nepali boys warm-up before an army exercise trial known as the British Fitness Test (BFT) at the British Gurkha Regiment's army camp at Pokhara, Nepal. These boys are among those trying for a highly-valued place in the regiment after a gruelling series of tests to eliminate the weaker and less able candidates. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. Nepal has been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • Wearing his bathing costume, a young adventurer clambers over rocks in the Gross Enz river in Germany's Black Forest. The lad of 10 crouches to better balance himself, carefully placing his bare feet on the slippery rock's surface as he emerges from the chilly mountain water. It is high summer and we can see the boy backlit by the glare of strong sunlight in the background. The Gross Enz river rises in Enzklosterle in Baden-Württemberg and is an eventual tributary of the Neckar. Geologically, the Black Forest consists of a cover of sandstone on top of a core of gneiss. During the last glacial period, the Würm glaciation, the Black Forest was covered by glaciers.

  • Reaching out to a tower of scaffolding, high above the skyline of North London, a member of a company of abseiling construction scaffold workers make use of circus skills. Suspended with ropes, carabinas and a seat harness normally used by mountaineers, this man is wearing a safety helmet and blue overalls and his dirty gloved hand is about to make contact with yellow iron work as his colleague looks skyward, already tethered to the reinforced structure. A 60s tower block is immediately behind and suburban houses and streets are below. We see a man about to make contact with a place of safety, reaching out to his destination while spread across London's skies. Lit by flash, this picture is confusing because the viewer sees a false sense of size and scale between the iron work and the flats behind.
