  • One single soldier of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment of the British Army, stifles a yawn, his white gloved hand covering his gaping mouth. They are all in correct position, practising for an official portrait at Redford Barracks, Edinburgh, which will include the her Majesty the Queen the next day. After hours of rehearsal arriving efficiently into position, warm summer fatigue set in. • An entire rank of Grenadier Guardsmen musicians are playing clarinets as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations, one event in a series to mark her 50th year on the throne. The soldiers have formed a marching band guard that is making its way along the Mall, that broad avenue from Buckingham Palace. Focus is on one guardsman whose bearskin is slightly higher than his of his comrades. Their music sheets are pinned on specially adapted stands on the ends on their instruments making the job of marching in absolutely straight, regimented lines the more easier. The Grenadier Guards (GREN GDS) is the most senior regiment of the Guards Division of the British Army, and, as such, is the most senior regiment of infantry. The Grenadier Guards celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2006.

  • Looking down from a high vantage point, we se boy pupils seated as they gather in front of the Headmaster during morning assembly at the City of London School for boys in central London. Individual faces in neat rows stretch into the distance as we look past the Headmaster who is addressing, facing his students. Some seem serious, a few are looking bored while one boy can be seen coughing into his hand and another looking away with a smirk. We can see a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, skin colours and hairstyles. The City of London School (CLS) is a boys' public school on the banks of the River Thames. It traces its origins to a bequest of land by John Carpenter, town clerk of London in 1442. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • A Muslim community Imam prays at the bedside of a patient who is staying on the Phyllis Friend surgical ward, Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, London. They both hold out their hands in prayer and the patient puts them to his face. It is daylight behind the bed but the two men are lit by artificial light from a bulb. The Royal London is one of London's oldest, having been founded in 1740 and is a major teaching hospital in Whitechapel, East London. It is part of the Barts and the London NHS Trust, alongside St Bartholomew's Hospital ("Barts"), which is a couple of miles away. Because of the cultural profile of East London, patients tend to be from many faiths, speaking many languages.

  • While visiting London's tourist sites, a young boy of about 5 years-old spends time at Horse Guards where a soldier from the Household Cavalry, also dressed in a deep red coat, stands motionless and at-ease. It is a bright day and the gray stonework amplifies the scarlett uniform tunics as the boy has his picture taken by family. The British Household Cavalry is classed as a corps in its own right, and consists of two regiments: Life Guards (British Army) and the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). They are the senior regular regiments in the British Army, with traditions dating from 1660.

The woman is laying back in a comfortable armchair with her right arm flat on a cushion and the tubes that feeds her blood by vascular access from her body into the the dialyzer, a machine that filters the unpurified blood due to the patient's renal (kidney) failure. • With great care, two surgeons work intensely during an open heart procedure at the private Health Care International hospital, They wear hygienic face masks and do their intricate work carefully. This hospital delivered only high-end medicine to foreign patients and telemedicine was popular in the 90s when a growing awareness of the potential benefits of advanced medicine, emerging democracies, growing middle classes and an ageing population world-wide established locations like this in Scotland. But they were expensive to build and run and this hospital at Clydebank of up to 500 beds catered primarily for foreigners who flew into Glasgow airport, was built with the assistance of £30 million of public money, went into receivership when its target of overseas business was slower to build-up impacting its cash flows.

  • An NHS surgeon performs an operation in a London hospital using endoscopy. Watching the progress of the instrument as it makes its way along a part of the stomach, the surgeon uses his skill to make minute adjustments using great care and hand-eye co-ordination. Endoscopy means ‘looking inside’ and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope, an instrument used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. Unlike most other medical imaging devices, endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ. Endoscopy can also refer to using a borescope in technical situations where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible.

Buffing up their bearskin hats and brushing away any specks of dust from shoulders, they each help the other appear as near-perfect as they can before parading in front of thousands during the Changing of the Guard or at other times, during tropping of the Colour on the Queen's birthday occasion. Formed in 1915 by order of King George V, have fought in every war since but are housed at the Wellington Barracks purely for ceremonial reasons, also serving on active duty in the world's trouble spots, where their professionalism is demanded by their British Ministry of Defence masters.

  • Tourists crowd in the Salon de Mars in the King’s Grand Apartment, Versaille, Paris. The choice of this military theme which inspired all the decoration of the salon can be explained by the fact that this large room was originally meant to serve as the guard room for the parade apartment. It was later reserved, at evening soirees, for music and dancing, so that it was commonly known as the "ballroom". The court ballets were strictly regulated and required many rehearsals; the princes took part in them, sometimes mixed in with professional dancers. The Palace of Versailles or simply Versailles, is a royal château in Versailles in the Île-de-France region of France. In French it is the Château de Versailles.
