  • Peeled and torn poster showing remains of woman's face and features in Soho, central London. The eyes of a female model peer through the layers of torn paper in a small street in the capital - a vandalised version of what was once an expensive advertising campaign reduced to litter and waste. The resulting image seems almost abstract, an artistic statement of dystopia and finality.

  • Shimenawa and Shime tied to a tree in the grounds of a temple. Nikko, Japan. Sacred places are typically marked with a shimenawa (special plaited rope) and shime (strips of white paper). Placed at the entrances of holy places to ward off evil spirits, or placed around trees/objects to indicate presence of kami. Made of rice straw or hemp, the rope is called nawa 縄. The pieces of white paper that are cut into strips and hung from these ropes (often hung from ropes on Torii gates as well) are called shime 注連 or gohei; they symbolize purity in the Shintō faith.

  • We look through the windscreen of a Royal Air Force C-130-J Hercules to see a pilots-eye view of his fixed head-up-display (HUD), while in flight over Hampshire during the Farnborough Air Show. We see the aircraft flying data in green set against the magenta colour (color) of the clouds and sky beyond. The pilot will see the statistics that are important aspects of his aeroplane's altitude, compass heading, localiser, air speed, pitch, roll and yaw. Head-up displays are increasingly important to military and commercial aircraft (airplanes) when information can be displayed without obstructing the user's front view front. The second type of HUD is mounted within a protective helmet visor. The C-130 Hercules primarily performs the tactical portion of airlift operations. The aircraft is capable of operating from rough, dirt strips and is the prime transport for air dropping troops and equipment into hostile areas. The C-130-J is the newer generation digital version with fully integrated digital avionics; color multifunctional liquid crystal displays including the HUD; state-of-the-art navigation systems with dual inertial navigation system and global positioning system; fully integrated defensive systems; low-power color radar; digital moving map display; new turboprop engines with six-bladed, all-composite propellers; digital auto pilot; improved fuel, environmental and ice-protection systems; and an enhanced cargo-handling system.

  • A strip of tourist postcards is on sale as a workman passes-by carrying ladder near the Eiffel Tower, at the Trocadero, Paris. It is an exceptionally dark and gloomy day in the French capital. In the foreground we see the uncut of tourist mementoes being offered for sale by North African vendors, hawking whatever they can to the many coaches that stop here on the Paris tour route. Images of the Mona Lisa, the Louvre art gallery, Notre Dame cathedral and the city skyline can be bought. But more strangely is the workman passing-by carrying a ladder, on his way to cleaning nearby windows. The ladder resembles the rung-effect of the postcards’ strip while in the background is the Eiffel Tower, rising above rooftops and the plaza floor.
