  • Empty rigid-design gas holders architecture at the Oval, South London. The steel frames are seen against an afternoon sky at Oval, in south London - their strengthening architecture showing how the gasometer design has been an effective method storing gas for a hundred years. The Oval Gasholders at The Oval cricket ground, in spite of no longer being used, are now a grade 2 listed structure. Typical volumes for large gasholders are about 50,000 cubic metres, with 60 metre diameter structures. Gasholders tend to be used nowadays for balancing purposes (making sure gas pipes can be operated within a safe range of pressures) rather than for actually storing gas for later use.

  • A 4.1m high bronze sculpture of a boy on a rocking horse has been unveiled on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, England, UK. Artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset say "Powerless Structures, Fig 101 (the title of the piece) questions "monuments predicated on military victory or defeat". They said it was "up to the public to love it or hate it" but "hopefully not ignore it". Funded by the Mayor of London and Arts Council England, the sculpture will remain in place for a year. The artists said, in a statement, that "the image of a young boy astride his rocking horse encourages viewers to consider the less spectacular events in their lives which are often the most important". The Fourth Plinth is an empty plinth in Trafalgar Square in central London originally intended to hold an equestrian statue. For over 150 years there was much squabbling about what to do with the fourth plinth, but very little agreement, until the temporary use of the plinth to display three pieces of art in the last years of the 20th century lead to a commission being formed to decide on a use for it. Eventually that commission unanimously decided to use it for the temporary display of artworks.

  • Seen from a high viewpoint, we overlook loading of roll cages at the Sainsbury's 700,000 sq ft (57,500sq m) supermarket warehouse and distribution depot at Waltham Point London England. This is the largest of 10 distribution centres using an automated ordering system for receiving food direct from suppliers by truck through 170 dock doors. Long-distance vehicles depart every two minutes, 24 hours a day, 364 days a year to 80 UK stores and handling 2.5m supermarket cases a week. The temperature is just above freezing point in a series of chill, ambient and frozen chambers. Real-time ordering means that stores can obtain requested stock within hours. Food orders are conveyed (at 2 meters a second) with sorter systems that group products together, ordering them to favour the layout of specific stores, optimising how the shelves are stacked.

  • An inconguous landscape of modern industrial architecture and a foreground of a patchy, poorly-made service road at Northfleet, near Gravesend, Kent England. This is Kimberly Clark's Northfleet Mill which manufactures paper-based products for the hygiene and health market such as tissues and nappies (diapers). The word concrete has been sprayed by aerosol on the ground along with a locating X that marks a confusing and ironic spot for concrete to be found. The high-sided blue walls of the mill factory are smooth and unlike the rough road and to the right the sky is overcast while on the right, it is blue. Kimberly-Clark is a leading global health and hygiene company employing more than 55,000 people worldwide and posting sales of $16.7 billion.

Dotted along the banks of the Gironde Estuary are countless wooden fishing huts which have been built on stilts. Their main implement is a square-shaped pulley-operated net (or “filet carré”) which has given the humble shacks their name: “carrelets”. Talmont-sur-Gironde is a commune in the Charente-Maritime department in the Poitou-Charentes region, 5 km (9.3 mi) south of Royan, on a small promontory which dominates the Gironde estuary.

  • On a hot afternoon on Calcutta's Maidan, an Indian lady catches a frisbee disc in both hands in front of the glorious Victoria Memorial, the beautiful marble structure built by the British still during the days of the colonial Indian Raj. The lady is lit with golden light and her bottle green sari stands out from a background tree. She grimaces as she stretches to hold on to the frisbee and there are many hundreds of families and groups in the background, nearer to the white, domed building. Built between 1906 and 1921, it is a majestic white marble building at the southern end of the Maidan, a large expansive park in central Calcutta city. Nowadays it is a museum and group activities are being discouraged due to the fears that pollution will damage this fine structure that honours Queen Victoria, then Empress of India.
