• Beneath the giant, solid pillars of the Bank of England in the heart of London’s financial district – the ancient Square Mile – a man dressed in a traditional pinstripe suit has stopped to make a phone call or check for messages. Halting his journey along this street he has opted to stand in line with a traffic no waiting cone and also near double-yellow lines that restrict parking or stopping. Without the cone or lines this scene would otherwise be without colour - the columns of this financial institution and the pavement (sidewalk) are drab – so the welcome yellow gives this picture more interest. We only see the man from the rear view and so he remains anonymous, a small person set against the scale of a large-scale financial landscape.

 • A rather eccentric-looking man is seated on a bench on Blackpool's North Pier. This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. The pier has intricate cast ironwork seat backs dating from 1863 and the man sits with ankles crossed, wearing a suit and trilby hat on a warm summer's day. In the background we see families - parents and children - playing and walking on the beach at low-tide - the golden sands a much-visited aspect of Blackpool, the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

 • A man dressed in a dark suit and tie, shoes and socks lies down on his matching jacket for a short rest - perhaps during a lunchtime break from an office job - and stretches out on the incline of Blackpool seafront. In the background is Blackpool Tower, an architectural copy of Paris' Eiffel Tower opened to the public on 14 May 1894 and rises to 158m (518 ft 9 inches). As a sort of English eccentric character, the man looks incongruous as he sleeps in sunshine amid other holidaymakers. This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. Blackpool is the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

 • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

 • Covered in flour, water, streamers and wearing a fez, a male student celebrates the end of Finals (exams) at Oxford University by partying his way back from his university college and on to an all-night party. In celebration of this achievement, of surviving the pressure and stress of the last examinations, students all over the city in the same fortunate position, carry bottles of alcohol (here it is Champaign) to their residences where the partying continues, shared by contemporaries and friends. Many have hired formal suits for the occasion. In the street, the young man pauses before another dance across the road where mates await him. Oxford is the third oldest surviving university in the world and the oldest surviving in the English-speaking world and is regarded as one of the world's leading academic institutions.

 • Two businessmen - one younger than the other, who may be his superior - pace through the Broadgate Estate during a break in the working day in the City of London, the capital's financial centre - otherwise called the Square Mile. Seen as they walk fast under a covered alleyway, the warm sun strikes their faces while they are deep in conversation - perhaps discussing a strategy while fetching a local coffee. Deep shadow allows us to focus in on their dark suits, their pink skin and the similarly orange colour of the strong vertical columns that form this urban architecture completed in the Bishopsgate development of the mid-1980s. Broadgate is a large, 32 acres (129,499 m2) office and retail estate in the City of London, owned by British Land and managed by Broadgate Estates.

I was here when it was shelled, The archives were saved from the Taliban who wanted to burn them. They were hidden in a secret room”
His boss is Engineer Latif Ahmadi, who explains how, even with the allied occupation of Kabul, filming is still difficult:

“We were filming a hundred yards from a suicide bombing, one hundred metres from the Ministry of Culture, five people were killed. We actually felt the force of the explosion and heard the shots. It took two minutes for the dust to clear but I told the director, ‘please continue’, because what can we do but carry on?”

 • In the shadow of 1 Canada Square, the iconic Canary Wharf tower in London's Docklands stands as an icon for Thatcherite Britain when the good times, prosperity and economic upturns seemed unshakeable. Four work colleagues stand under a hot lunchtime sun during a summer heatwave. In their shirtsleeves the men each hold pints of refreshing lager, all having removed their dark jackets to enjoy the company of a flirtatious female who appears to be flirting with an older male companion. The sky is blue and the five are care-free to any future economic uncertainty.

 • As a young office worker sleeps incongruously on a marble pavement, a street sweeper nearby brushes away litter with a small dustpan. The manual labourer wears blue overalls, yellow gloves and keys in his back pocket while the man in a wastecoat and smart trousers and polished slip-on shoes appears to be fast asleep, his fingers across his chest. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-demanding job of a man whose life has been spent cleaning and sweeping. English social differences is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus a lazy youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.
