• As one enters the monastic complex, ones is welcomed by a shrine and a standing Buddha with a raised hand in a gesture of reassurance and blessing to visitors, The "parasol" over his head indicates the supremacy of Buddhism. The central figure of the Manfeilang Monastery ( of the Dai denomination) is the White Pagoda which lies on elevated ground on the banks of the Mekong river in south west Yunnan province. Dai monasteries are built in the centre of a village or as in this case outside on higher ground.

Built in 1204, the Manfeilang monastery complex is in fact a cluster of nine pagodas or stupas, to enshrine what is purported to be the Buddha’s footprint. The whole ensemble forms a fusion of Southeast Asian Buddhist style with typical Dai architecture. It is popular for Buddhist pilgrims from the surrounding region which attracts thousands during the Tan Ta Festival in late October early November each year. In this region and in these Dai and Sino-Burmese monasteries, Theravada Buddhism is the religion that is practiced.

 • Before finalists take part in their last exercises at a gymkhana pony competition, these rosettes prizes seen here in close-up detail wait to be claimed by young winners and losers. From the top we see prizes for Reserve Champions then those for 1st prize, then second, third and runners-up at the very bottom. Such accolades are won and lost by fractions of a second but their importance is remembered for years afterwards as young girls desperately practice to improve their equestrian skills. A huge commitment is needed by the girls and their parents who spend great deals of money and time for these treasured prizes which can be won or lost by fractions of seconds or single points. Those that fail to win go home feeling empty-handed or perhaps cheated out of victory and glory. Those who win hang them on bedroom walls for years to come.

 • Military jet fighter engines awaiting recycling for scrap value in arid desert at Davis Monthan facility, Tucson, Arizona. A landscape of old technology, the relics of former wars and air supremacy now reduced to aluminium and sprayed IDs. Jet pipes and power plants, the energy to get multi-million aircraft into the air to attack or defend territory and culture. These retired aircraft engines whose air frames are too old for flight are being stored then recycled, their aluminium worth more than their sum total at this repository for old military fighter and bomber aircraft.

 • Although we see the arms and bodies of three young African American men jumping high for a basketball, there is a fourth arm trying to make contact with the ball as all four males leap high at the basket ball net which has just bounced off the ring, scoring no points. We see the face of one black man whose white teeth and silver-coloured necklace shine in the sunshine. He looks up to watch the other hands fight for the ball’s possession as the teams battle for supremacy. In the background is a mural painted on the court’s wall showing a running dribbling basket ball player who seems to be leaping over the head of one player in the foreground. There are large tattooed deltoid shoulder muscles and masses of energy on show in this scene of ultimate determination and desire to win.
