  • Yellow-painted square surrounds a dying potted plant in a central London street. The detail is of angles and lines, of bright colour in a landscape of otherwise drab shades of grey. Someone has clearly decided that the potted plant is a danger to the unwary who might trip up. The yellow is then, a warning to the dangers of pavement hazards.

  • With his personal belongings and beach shingle surrounding him, a man sits on his seaside towel in soft sunlight in Dover eating a snack which is dribbling out of his mouth. The skin from many previous hours of exposure to solar radiation has left him raw and sunburned and therefore dried and dying skin is peeling in shreds on his back and shoulder. He looks like an eccentric local character who seems oblivious to the health risks that his continued sunbathing is inflicting on his bizarrely scorched body.

  • An elderly lady lies oddly on the grass surrounded by crowd of Britons out in Hyde Park to celebrate the 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. As if awoken and surprised at being surrounded by a melee of people, the eccentric woman gives a disapproving stare at a passer-by. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • During a lull in activity, a Boeing 747 is swathed in engineering gantries during a major check (maintenance schedule) at the British Airways Heathrow base in London England. As if in a hospital ER several metres off the ground, yellow struts surround the aircraft's forward nose section and the first class windows along the white fuselage allowing mechanics, engineers and avionics specialists unimpeded access to every element of the air frame. Neon tubes illuminate the hangar that houses flying machines which are serviced here between transcontinental commercial passenger flights. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991, two young "Scouse' girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. There is an older, taller white teenage girl with blonde hair dressed in a blue shell-suit and a shorter and younger friend of Asian-descent. Looking suspicious and amused at something across the cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre, home to deprived families. The industrial action aginst the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • In the darkness of a taxiway at the southern end of Heathrow Airport, the bright lights of an engineering hangar spill out into the night. A Boeing 747 Jumbo jet sits nose-in behind another during a scheduled set of maintenance tasks that every aircraft needs to keep to in order for its continued airworthiness. The unmistakable shape of this large aircraft is a half-silhouette against the intensity of the hangar and blue flare spots that arise from the internal glass in the camera's lens. Buses, cars and three scooters and riders appear to be stuck in the middle of a motoring nightmare as no-one goes anywhere - the progress of this journey to destinations and life itself, has ground to a halt. A bus passenger looks out resigned through her window, a driver on another vehicle rests his hand on a ledge and the riders are sandwiched between cars. The dot matrix sign on the 60 bus it mentions its own destination, the abbreviation for Piazza spelled as "P.za". The Piazza Venezia takes its name from the adjacent Palazzo Venezia, the former embassy in the city of the Republic of Venice. Looking down at this detail view of the street barriers, ordinarily designed for roadworks and pedestrian health and safety barriers, we see the temporary paper attached to the interlocking plastic items warning us pedestrians of entering a restricted area. It is of course pointless and indicative of bylaws and safety concerns gone mad. They have apparently been stacked until needed for further use during roadworks for London's cycling superhighway.

John Constable the painter was born here and is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home—now known as Constable Country—which he invested with an intensity of affection. • Visitors to the ancient site of Stonehenge celebrate the Summer Solstice on the morning of June 21st - the longest day - by dancing in circles while holding hands. The Stonehenge site is a place of pilgrimage for neo-druids and those following pagan or neo-pagan beliefs. The midsummer sunrise began attracting modern visitors in 1870s. Today the stones are owned by English Heritage, the guardians of ancient and historical structures. Most years, substantial police and barriers prevent on-lookers from approaching the stones but on this occasion, revellers were allowed to party long after the early 4.15am sunrise. Stonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monument located near Amesbury in the English county of Wiltshire. Composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones it is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Archaeologists think that the standing stones were erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC and served as an outdoor observatory from where to watch the constellations. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986.
