Bending down to the child's face, the mum makes her point known to the youngster who stands astride her toy before continuing their journeys around the upper paths of this Victorian public space. Brockwell Park is a 50.8 hectare (125.53 acres) park located between Brixton, Herne Hill and Tulse Hill. Brockwell Hall house and its grounds were acquired by the London County Council (LCC) in March 1891 and opened to the public the following summer. In 1901 the LCC acquired a further 43 acres (17 ha) of land north of the original park.

Wearing aprons popular for working mums in this era of early 1960s, and one seemingly pregnant, the two women talk about families and children and their lives at the beginning of a new decade. This row of houses is in the Essex suburb of Westcliff, Southend and a proud gardener has grown a colourful bed of dahlias in the front. The picture was recorded on Kodachrome (Kodak) film in about 1961.

  • British schoolchildren on a daytrip to the capital enjoy a chance encounter with guardsmen at Horseguards on London's Whitehall. Gathering around the two troops, they talk to the caucasian man rather than the smaller man of afro-caribbean descent, both wearing the scarlet uniform tunics of the British Household Cavalry. This regiment is classed as a corps in its own right, and consists of two regiments: Life Guards (British Army) and the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). They are the senior regular regiments in the British Army, with traditions dating from 1660.

  • Still in the era of being able to smoke inside public places, an elderly gentleman extinguishes his match by waving it in the air to blow out the flame, exhaling and listening to a fellow-drinker in a Newport pub in south Wales. Clouds of smoke can be seen as they waft against the back light that filters through the windows of this smoky bar in the town centre. Pints of bitter are on the table in front of them and ash trays with used butts. The scene is of an industrial town’s pub for working men where language is sharp and there is talk of realities of hard lives.

Ladbrokes plc is a British based gaming company founded by Messrs Schwind and Pendleton in 1886 as commission agents for horses trained at Ladbroke Hall in Worcestershire. The name Ladbrokes was adopted in 1902 when one Arthur Bendir joined the partnership and operations were moved to London. It is today listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a member of the FTSE 250 Index, having been relegated from the FTSE 100 Index in June 2006.

Facing each other on a low wall that borders the grounds of this historic religious site, the men talk and concentrate on forking their food during their hour off. The original Saxon church, the foundations of which were discovered when the present church was erected, is first mentioned as ‘Sancti Botolfi Extra Bishopesgate’ in 1212. St. Botolph without Bishopsgate may have survived the Great Fire of London unscathed, and only lost one window in the Second World War, but on 24 April 1993 was one of the many buildings to be damaged by an IRA bomb.
