Before the days of state provision for the old, infirm or poor it was common for wealthy individuals to bequeath money or property to the local parish or to set up independent institutions to assist those in need locally. Many ancient parishes have such institutions and many almshouses still survive. • Hopton's Almshouses, Hopton Street, Southwark, London, UK. Tall glass buildings loom behind these historically important houses at Bankside and near to Tate Modern. Founded by Robert Hopton, fishmonger in 1730. Properties built around a garden in 1752 and are still in use. Before the days of state provision for the old, infirm or poor it was common for wealthy individuals to bequeath money or property to the local parish or to set up independent institutions to assist those in need locally. Many ancient parishes have such institutions and many almshouses still survive. However it is unusual to find one founded as early as 1752 still in its original form, carrying out its original function, so close to London.Hopton's Almshouses were founded from a trust set up by the will of Charles Hopton.

  • Beyond Edwardian period homes bordering Ruskin Park in south London, the residential skyscraper called St George Wharf Tower rises from the Nine Elms development at Battersea above the foreground houses and 100 year old ash trees in the borough of Lambeth. The tower is 181 metres (594 ft) tall with 49 storeys, the tallest residential building in the United Kingdom. We see a landscape of change, from the era of Edwardian Britain to the twenty-tens, when property is being built for the benefit of the wealthy Londoners and especially, foreign buyers from China and the middle-east who are investing in new flats but who rarely occupy them at the expense of those needing homes.

  • The One Canada Square is seen soon after its completion in the early-1990s. Seen from a low angle inside the dome of Cabot Square shopping mall, we see the tall building rising above us. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape. One Canada Square (often incorrectly called Canary Wharf, after its location) is a skyscraper in Canary Wharf, London. It was the tallest building in the United Kingdom from 1990 to 2010, standing at 235 metres (770 ft) above ground level and containing 50 storeys.
