  • Members of the British Royal Marines band march under a giant backdrop of Lord Horatio Nelson's flagship HMS Victory during the Royal Tournament. Ranks of the musical soldiers appear from between large doors that are already closing behind their last rows. Above them is the huge mural depicting the famous sea battles at which Nelson and his fleet of warship navy were victorious such as Gibraltar; Quiberon; Saintes and Cape St. Vincent. The Royal Tournament was the World's largest military tattoo and pageant, held by the British Armed Forces annually between 1880 and 1999. The venue was originally the Royal Agricultural Hall and latterly the Earls Court Exhibition Centre. In its later years it also acted as a fundraising event for leading forces charities, such as The Royal British Legion.

  • In the foreground we see the strong forearm of a British army soldier whose blood group O-Negative has been tattooed in large letters beneath an image of a Japanese Geisha girl. He also wears a watch with aq green strap matching his working army fatigues uniform. Behind him are two part-time territorial army conscripts who are sitting on their army-issued rucksack Bergens awaiting further orders to serve on active duty from Sandhurst military academy to the Balkans during Operation Resolute, the National Support Element to support NATO action. The dominating figure in the foreground stands upright though we don't see his face. His two conscripts sit on the ground looking dejected or perhaps worried about their forthcoming duties. They are still in civillian clothing, jeans and t-shirts but will soon change into uniform.

  • Elderly visitors to Weston-super-Mare read an events brochure on the seaside resort's seafront. We look down on the tops of their heads and straw hats, both circular with bands - one for women and another for men. The husband has a walking stick and tattoo on his forearm and wears stripes while the woman is in floral patterns - both gender fashion stereotypes.

  • Woman with a stylish tattoo on Portobello Road market, Notting Hill, West London, UK. This famous Saturday market is when the antique stalls line the streets as well as the food stalls further down the hill. This is classic London with busy crowds of people coming to hang out, maybe buy something, or just browse the stalls and have some food.

  • At the famous Butlins holiday camp in the Somerset town of Minehead, a poolside lifeguard overlooks the main pool from an overhead bridge. Behind him a monorail transports holidaymakers around the resort. Wearing the large letter B for Butlins on his red vest, the young lad sucks on his whistle held between his lips and prominently, the words 'Made in England' have been tattooed on his left shoulder - as if a statement for his patriotic ideals but also for those of Butlins - an institution for the British working classes who after the war had the opportunity to spend their summers at special resorts in seaside towns that provided entertainment and fun. Butlins and other camp businesses went into decline when the masses preferred Spanish vacations but have since been revived as travel costs have again soared and holidays at home are once again popular.

  • A tattooed hand on a young boy in Battambang prison. STARS visiting Legal Aid of Cambodia(LAC). General stats:Figues as of April 2011; 15,001 inmates in 26 prisons across Cambodia. 730 children, 26 girls. 9,607 detainees convicted, 5,394 awaiting trial. 252 children are awaiting trial. Children are according to the law supposed to go to trial within 6 months of arrest but many wait up to a year before a sentencing regardless of the severity of the offence. Battambang provincial prison has 1170 inmates ( capacity 700) including 37 children and youths under 18. Most cases amongst the boys are rape, a few murders and robbery. Stealing food & drink to eat is considered a robbery if offence is commited by two or more individuals and comes with severe punishment. Most of cases amongst girls are robbery. Without LAC none of these children would have any legal representaion. Being arrested by police on suspicion of commiting a crime they can spend up to a year awaiting trial, if convicted ( rape is 1-4 years) they can expect to wait up to several years for an appeal hearing.
