The picture was recorded on Kodachrome (Kodak) film in about 1964.

  • Live BBC news is being broadcast on TV screens in the John Lewis department store in Oxford Street, London, England. The Reverend Jesse Jackson who once stood next to Martin Luther-King during the days of segregation and racial discrimination sobs with tears falling down his face at Barack Obama's victory rally before party faithful at a rally in Chicago. His face is large on the many home cinema screens seen across the world's media after this historic political election which saw the election of America's first black Commander in chief. A shopper stops to watch the lunchtime news programme as Jackson weeps with joy thinking of the changes promised to bring to America while the rest of the world looks on hoping for new political directions.

  • The head of an opium poppies oozing sap in an upland field in remote Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. After the petals fall from the opium poppy, the heads are incised with a 4 bladed tool; the tool is used to score the skin lightly from top to bottom. During the day, the sap oozes out of the cuts and hangs in tears on the poppy head. The next day the sap is then scraped into a metal container. As recently as 1998, Lao PDR was the third largest illicit opium poppy producer in the world. From 1998 to 2005, opium poppy cultivation in Lao PDR was reduced by 93 per cent. In more remote areas where cash crops are not viable, surveys from UNODC have shown that between 2008 and 2011 the area under opium poppy cultivation has doubled and continues to rise.

  • Portrait of fishermen and seaweed farmers Francisco I. Yeliganio (38) and Zosima Yeliganio (37) in the sea, Tamiao, Bantayan Island, The Philippines. On November 6 2013 Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and was one of the most powerful storms to ever make landfall. The storm had a devastating impact on the fishing and seaweed industry. It also caused extensive environmental damage shifting coral beds, tearing down coconut trees and ripping mangrove forests apart all of which will have a long term impact on ecosystems and the communities who rely on them for food and employment. Oxfam is working to support the immediate and long-term needs of affected communities on Bantayan Island.

  • Sitting drunk on a mid-town sidewalk (pavement), a construction worker wipes tears from his eyes. The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.

  • A lone seagull circles above the British Union Jack Flag which flies in a stiff breeze, its colours of red-white and blue almost wholly horizontal as the wind tears through the blue skies and beneath thin, high clouds above Brighton East Sussex, England UK. Tied to its flag-pole, this symbol of patriotic nationalism, evokes a sense of pride and spirit the British are known for - having encouraged them through two world wars and more recently, other military campaigns. The colours (colors) of Scotland's blue and white crosses and the English cross of St. George are merged to make this well-known symbol of the British Isles.
