  • A Nepali lady sits on corrugated iron alongside a giant satellite dish on the roof of her home' in a suburb of Kathmandu, Nepal. We see the sunny street below in the background and other rooftops of scattered aerials, roughly-made brick walls. She has hung her colourful (colorful) clothes washing out to dry on a line and on the structure's bowl-like shape that points towards space and signals from the outside world. It was designed to receive television signals from Nepal's main TV station is Nepal Television (NTV) whose programmes are mostly serials from Pakistan and Hindi films. Nepalis however, search the wider-world for their news digest and western culture, especially during governmental crackdown and censorship during the democracy protest disturbances of 2006. King Gyanendra imposed severe media restrictions after assuming direct control of the country the previous year. The scene is of new technology in the backdrop of a poor, third world country who freedoms of expression and experience of western democracy has been tested in recent years.

  • A sun symbol belonging to the Communist Party of Nepal (UML - Unified Marxist Leninist) is seen before elections in a wide landscape of a Himalayan valley in the Gorkha district, one of the 75 districts of central Nepal. Beyond the red-painted sign that has been painted in red on a footpath rock, unavoidable by community passers-by, are fertile terraces where rice and other agricultural crops are growing to sustain villages in these foothills. The light is clear and we can see into the far distance to valleys and hills beyond.

Fish used to be abundant for local communities and for tourist menus but over-fishing resulted in stocks now having to come from other areas. The lake is still the second largest lake in Nepal and lying at an altitude of 784 m (2,572 ft) it covers an area of about 4.43 km2 (1.7 sq mi) with an average depth of about 8.6 m (28 ft) with maximum water depth is 19 m (62 ft). The lake is also used for commercial fishing. The tourist area is along the north shore of the lake (Lake Side and Dam Side).

  • A portrait of three brothers of the same family have their picture taken outside their parents' home in Westcliff, England. The eldest is a teenager of approximately 17 and is holding his youngest brother who is still only 12 months-old. The third boy is biting his lip while looking to the viewer, more anxiously than the other two. He is possibly 14 but both the elder lads wear identically-designed jumpers that cut across the throat to allow their clean white shirts and ties to remain visible. Apart from the young child, the elders share the same dark hair colour but genetically, they share one chromosome that has given them heavy eyebrows, a family trait. This was taken on Kodachrome film stock in the spring of 1961 so the look and feel of the image is dated with wonderfully muted colours that this Kodak film offered to consumers in the early 60s.

  • The head of an opium poppies oozing sap in an upland field in remote Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. After the petals fall from the opium poppy, the heads are incised with a 4 bladed tool; the tool is used to score the skin lightly from top to bottom. During the day, the sap oozes out of the cuts and hangs in tears on the poppy head. The next day the sap is then scraped into a metal container. As recently as 1998, Lao PDR was the third largest illicit opium poppy producer in the world. From 1998 to 2005, opium poppy cultivation in Lao PDR was reduced by 93 per cent. In more remote areas where cash crops are not viable, surveys from UNODC have shown that between 2008 and 2011 the area under opium poppy cultivation has doubled and continues to rise.

  • A burred jet airliner lands at London Heathrow airport, coming in over the perimeter fence on the southern runway. As the plane descends, we see its blurred shape against the dusk sky - a busy time in the airport's day. London Heathrow is a major international airport, the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic. It is also the third busiest airport in the world by total passenger traffic, handling more international passengers than any other airport around the globe. From the chapter entitled 'Up in the Air' and from the book 'Risk Wise: Nine Everyday Adventures' by Polly Morland (Allianz, The School of Life, Profile Books, 2015).
