  • Commuters to-and-fro in the heat of a city summer during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. This is Victoria mainline station during a summer heatwave. It's a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes and we see masses of pedestrians and buses reflected in the glass of a bush shelter window. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. An official points out directions, someone shields his eyes from the sun, a lady walks with her hands in pockets, the 239 bus to Victoria approaches and sightseeing tours sign advertises tickets. People are seen in differing scales and sizes.

  • Commuters walk about in all directions in the heat of summer in the city during a 3-day underground tube strike in September 2007. As a result of the industrial action, the buses are full so the quickest way of reaching one's destination is to walk. People near Victoria Station, a transport hub for tube lines, buses and overground train routes so we see businessmen in dark suits during the heatwave, women striding along towards their transport home and we look up at them from a low-angle in the street. One man seems to pause from indecision while others are more confident about their fate and direction in life.

  • Air passengers exit and enter a transit train at Chicago O'Hare airport, Illinois USA. They pull suitcases behind them as they negotiate the airport terminal transport system that takes them across the sprawling complex of terminals and tunnels. A large central yellow traffic arrow saying OUT is most prominent telling arriving people to keep in the middle, allowing those departing to enter the carriage from the sides. There is a slight blur to the picture showing the hurrying nature of modern air travel, vastly different from the pioneering days of flight for only the socially elite. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • The silhouettes of departing passengers are seen against the strong natural light from the vast windows that face outwards of this aviation hub. Some travellers await their flights sitting down in comfortable seating - one with his hands behind his head - while others pace about Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow Airport. The scene is fairly monochrome without colour other than a grey background on this overcast day. Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • A Hapag-Lloyd container cargo ship navigates past two fishermen on the southern shores of the River Thames at Gravesend, Kent England. Pausing from their fishing, the two men lean over the sea defence wall to watch the traffic to-and-fro as one giant vessel after another departs from Tilbury Docks towards open sea. The Thames has historically long been a route for shipping that kept the capital supplied and although the docks have seen huge decreases in traffic and volume since the second world war, Tilbury remains a busy hub for containerized vessels arrivng from all over the world. There are 133 Hapag-Lloyd containerships with a capacity of around 499.000 TEU (Twenty foot containers), Container capacity exceeds 1,1 million (TEU) containers.

  • In the morning rush-hour, a busy road junction is seen during a snow-shower as traffic builds up at traffic lights and pedestrians to and fro in Dulwich Village, Southwark, South London. Snowflakes can be picked out in car headlights as a lollypop man in fluorescent yellow holds his stop sign to waiting cars, eager to get on with their journeys across the capital during bad weather at the start of 2010, A Mini still has a thick layer of snow on its roof and bonnet (hood) and a number 37 bus to Putney Heath has passengers on its top deck, steamed up in the chilly temperature outside and the warm moisture inside. On the far right is a grey GATSO traffic camera that flashes those who jump red lights. For those struggling to reach work or school, this is another challenging commuting morning.

  • With a giant Volkswagen (VW) poster of their Lupo car in the foreground, we are viewing an aerial view of Via dei Condotti, the pedestrian street that runs west from the Spanish steps in the Italian capital, Rome. Written in the Italian language, the banner says the word Astemia which in English translates teetotaller, implying the vehicle is clean and non-polluting - in other words, zero emissions. This high viewpoint is taken from the top of the famous landmark where the height and perspective allows us to see down the street where shoppers to and fro amid the occasional vehicle crosses or is parked to make deliveries. On the corner of the poster building are balconies, terraces and the shuttered windows of apartments.

  • From a slightly raised viewpoint we are looking up Bishopsgate Street in the oldest area of Britain's capital, the Square Mile in the City of London. As traffic is at a standstill when lights are red, pedestrians to and fro across the scene, blurring as they negotiate crossings and traffic islands mid-way across this old Roman and medieval highway that travels north-south in what is now the city's financial district. Buses can be seen in the far distance too adding to the general bustle of a busy metropolis. The highway tends to zigzag into the distance and with the foreshortening of a long lens, appears to have a compressed perspective.

  • Pedestrians and large construction site on the corner of Wallbrook and Cannon Street in the City of London. As Londoners to and fro, we see the junction of streets in the heart of the capital's financial quarter - also known as the Square Mile - founded by the Romans in the 1st century. These streets still follow their medieval routes, with this section once a busy river Wallbrook tributary that passed downhill on its way to empty into the Thames. The construction project wiull be known as The Wallbrook Building in its own Wallbrook triangle. Minerva are the developers, coincidentally, the Roman Godess of goddess of wisdom and sponsor of arts, trade, and strategy.

  • Strangers to and fro in a sunny City of a London street corner. Businessmen walk during lunchtime, in conversation with associates and strangers in their own space. In an almost cinematic moment of street corner life, we see reflected light from nearby plate glass office buildings that fill in shadows and darker places in the capital's financial heart - the City of London, known as the Square Mile, founded by the Romans in AD43.

  • Pedestrians pass-by a large hoarding ad for an opening store of G-Star on London's Oxford Street. The to and fro of Londoners as they walk past the large image of the male model lends a sense of scale, of small people in reality to the oversized masculinity of a male model.

  • Workmen to and fro on the corner of Berwick and Broadwick Streets on 7th March 2019, in London, England.

  • From a very low viewpoint, we see crowds of British citizens who to and fro beneath the Gothic tower of Big Ben in Parliament Square, London at almost 10 minutes past 2pm . Lots of people squeeze past each other during the closing stages of London's Marathon as the pavements is narrower when crowd barriers control numbers. A young lady finds her way through other passers-by as the clock tower rises at an angle, the perspective of the wide-angle lens' distortion. The female's t-shirt has a woman's face from the xx clothing brand. This is also election time and the people are subject to the democratic process as they elect an new leader to govern the state.
