• Taking a break from the London Marathon, a young runner dressed as Superman emerges from a Portaloo after a quick toilet stop. Located at the London Fire Brigade's station on Lower Thames Street in City of London in the capital's historic financial district, their empty fire hose snakes across the ground. The young man wears trainers, a red skirt, a Super-hero top with the Superman emblem on his chest and he walks out of the portable convenience adjusting a green frizzy wig. Disgarded mineral water bottles have been thrown on the ground by other passing athletes but this is a theatrical pun, that Superman changes personality, name and powers when leaving a telephone box. Apart from the colour (color) of the toilet, the runner and the hose, the background is drab and overcast. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

 • Protest for Fernando Montero outside his old workplace. London, UK. On 17th December 2015, Fernando Montero died following a heart attack. For the last 5 years he was employed as a cleaner by outsourcing giant Servest at the Willis Building, in the City. During this time, he was victim of a destructive workplace culture. His supervisors repeatedly shouted at him in public, refused him the right to use the toilet outside of break time, and failed to grant him annual leave. On the day of his death, Fernando called a friend in a state of distress. Too anxious to return to work, due to the treatment of himself and fellow workers. A few hours later, he was dead. For his wife Francia, the link between workplace stress and his death is straightforward: “He passed away of a heart attack because of the stress brought about by the abuse and bullying of his bosses.”

 • Police officers on duty including Islamiedin second Lieutenant and Abdullah second Lieutenant. They are not permitted to talk to the press.

One of the main problems for the police force, is overcoming corruption. Just before this photograph was taken a man pulled over and handed six rolls of toilet paper to the commander. The police hadn’t been paid for two months, so from the very smallest amounts to much larger sums, corruption is a way of getting by.

Experienced fixer, Zia Haidary elaborates: “If he had not been paid for two months, why is he still doing his job? He was fooling around, doing nothing then stopping people and cashing in on the bribes. My neighbour was arrested, he is a drug dealer. The police found 6kg of heroin and an AK47 in his house. The next day he is out of police custody - How? It is corrupt. The police here are uneducated boys who cannot find work. If you ask them to write their name, they can’t do it –they’re just really good at shooting.”

 • The Phunoi village of Ban Komenmai was relocated to join with Ban Nongkinnaly in November 2013 to make way for the Nam Ou dam project. New houses come with water, electricity, a rice store, a kitchen, a toilet and two bedrooms. But nowhere to grow food and the villagers currently face a long trek of several kilometres back to their old fields. In the Nam Ou river valley in Phongsaly Province, Lao PDR, the first phase of construction on the Nam Ou Cascade Hydropower Project by Chinese corporation Sinohydro has begun, the project will generate electricity, 90% of which will be exported to other countries in the region. The project will directly affect several districts in Phongsaly province through construction, reservoir impoundment and back flooding resulting in loss of land and assets and village relocation.
