  • Wall by Tom Blackford near Brick Lane. Street art in the East End of London is an ever changing visual enigma, as the artworks constantly change, as councils clean some walls or new works go up in place of others. While some consider this vandalism or graffiti, these artworks are very popular among local people and visitors alike, as a sense of poignancy remains in the work, many of which have subtle messages.

  • Hermit, Tom Leppard, 72, has lived in seclusion at this unidentified spot on the Isle of Skye, Scotland for 22 years. He sits contemplating his quiet life in a self-made shelter largely cut-off from the outside world. Wind and rain-proof against harsh Scottish winters, his army survival skills keep him fit and healthy but his memory is fading and suffers muscular ailments. None of his possessions suffer from damp or mildew because everything he owns is wrapped in plastic containers carefully stored in special holes about his camp. Few know his exact whereabouts but concerned locals visit when weather prevents him from crossing a 2km-wide Loch in an old canoe. His days are spent washing, cleaning and carrying out maintenance jobs that keeps his home clean and fresh. Tom is a former solder and sailor and chose this spot when he sought ultimate solitude.

He crouches as he emerges from his self-made shelter, largely cut-off from the outside world. Converting the north-facing dry-stone walls into a home against harsh Scottish winters, he uses a knowledge of survival skills to help him stay fit and largely healthy although his memory is fading and muscular ailments trouble him. Few know his exact whereabouts but concerned locals visit when weather prevents him from crossing a 2km-wide Loch in an old canoe. A tarpaulin roof is weighted down by heavy rocks as winds can be fierce this far north. His days are spent washing, cleaning and carrying out maintenance jobs that keeps his home clean and fresh. • Two contestants of the world worm charming competition bend down to use a fork and a recorder to encourage invertebrates out of the ground in a field at Willaston, Cheshire, England. One woman wears a plastic helmet and the other has a worm illustrated t-shirt with a handmade sign that reads"Ive got the worms!" There are 18 rules translated into 30 languages (including Tibetan) but here these two daft ladies use music and garden tools to vibrate the earth helping the worms to the surface in a 3-metre square plot. International flags are behind but local hero Tom Shufflebotham's 1980 world record still stands at 511 worms out of the ground in half an hour. The fattest worm ever caught weighed 6.6 grams, the most succesful method being hand vibrating a four tyne garden fork inserted approximately 15cms into the turf, known as 'twanging'.

  • In evening city mist, a car park attendant stands guard over his downtown Atlanta parking lot. Next to him is a giant billboard for Marlboro with the classic face of the Marlboro cowboy, depicted drawing on a cigarette and wearing the traditional wide-brimmed stetson. They are low in the frame and the gloomy and eerie mist sits oppressively around the tall buildings, obscuring their top floors. Office lights still burn and a bright street light shines with the intensity of a small solar flare. The Marlboro Man is part of a tobacco advertising campaign for Marlboro cigarettes. The Marlboro Man was first conceived by the Leo Burnett agency in 1954. The image involves a rugged cowboy or cowboys, in nature with only a cigarette. The ads were originally conceived as a way to popularize filtered cigarettes, which at the time were considered feminine. Actor and author William Thourlby is said to have been the first Marlboro Man. The models who portrayed the Marlboro Man were New York Giants Quarterback Charley Conerly, New York Giants Defensive Back Jim Patton, Darrell Winfield, Dick Hammer, Brad Johnson, Bill Dutra, Dean Myers, Robert Norris, Wayne McLaren, David McLean and Tom Mattox. Two of them, McLaren and McLean, died of lung cancer.

  • Tom Alty, commentator and judge of Bartle, Lancashire chats about the quality of the pigs with a fellow judge, Stan Samuels. 'Showing pigs is a performance because you don't have a halter and rope or bridle, you just have a bat [a stick] and a board. You have to have an empathy between pig and handler, but even the good pigs are not as obedient as you'd like. At one show about 15 years ago I asked my wife, who had never taken an animal in the ring, to walk round an old Large Black sow. It was a placid pig, but suddenly there was a grunt and a rush, and the pig disappeared into the horticultural tent, which housed, among other things, a display of eggs. My wife has never been to a show since.'
