• One shovel-full of road grit has been left in a small pile at the kerb of a side road in East Dulwich, South London. Left by workers from the borough of Southwark, this modest supply is symbolic of the controversial problem of local government running low on street grits and salts that help prevent thousands of traffic collisions and pedestrian falls every winter. In January of 2010 (following the equally snow fall of February 2009) councils were caught unprepared for adverse weather which virtually brought towns and cities and rural communities to a standstill. We look down at the fallen snow, trodden by countless pairs of boots which compress the snow and make it an often treacherous surface on which to tread.

 • Six walkers blur as they walk through an English wood during a weekend ramble. The friends and colleagues make their way along a country path, through an oak forest in central Kent, south-east England. Our point of view follows the people as they blur, their rucksacks containing lunch and berries, their boots treading on the soft ground.

 • A Metropolitan Police diver surfaces beneath the murky waters of the River Thames in front of the tall buildings of the City of London, on 13th June 1993, in London, England. Blowing bubbles, he exhales through his oxygenated mask and looks through the Plexiglass to the viewer. The Underwater and Confined Space Search Team UCSST, are part of the Marine Support Unit and based at Wapping. They also carry out searches in canals, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. It was set up as a full time unit in 1964. One of their most distressing jobs, however, is recovering bodies from the River. On average over 50 people lose their lives in the Thames each year and about 80% of these are by suicide usually by jumping off one of the many bridges that cross the Thames. After a body is recovered from the River it is taken to the mortuary at Wapping Police Station for identification.

 • The legs and feet of students stand on a European map at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. The legs of foreigners can be seen with their feet covering the countries and states of the European Union (EU) although there are no borders or political boundaries. Instead, we see the land mass of continental Europe's mainland. Also marked are names of the oceans surrounding these countries, including the Baltic, Adriatic and North Seas. The map is in London's museum that celebrates Britain's maritime history, heritage and oceanic exploration.

 • Experienced hunter Byron Grubb out on the North Dakota prarie grasslands west of Minot, shooting upland game birds such as grouse (also known in this area as 'chickens'). Byron has been shooting for most of his life and puts considerable efforts into his hunting, efforts which reward him with wild game meats, none of which is wasted. This cold wet morning is not ideal for this type of shooting as the birds tend to sit tight in the undergrowth. The hunters on occasion nearly tread on the birds before they will take flight.

 • Sayed Mohammed, 18, a mason’s assistant is responsible for plastering the walls, during the renovation of the old city district of Murad Khane. He is using a traditional mud-based render made out of gravel, straw and mud.
“The builders tread the mud, straw and gravel mixture for a couple of days to make it strong” he says. “It’s tougher than concrete when it’s finished.” .

Sayed dreams of being a good mason, having a car and a family. He has been working since he was ten when he used to sell fruit during the Taliban years, he has no education. Murad Khane, the ancient centre of Kabul is undergoing a massive regeneration thanks to the Turquoise Mountain Foundation. The foundation was set up by Steward Rory Stewart, the man who’s life has inspired a Hollywood biopic starring Orlando Bloom. He walked across Afghanistan with his dog, governed a province in Iraq , tutored Prince William and Harry and was asked personally by Prince Charles to undertake the project of regenerating the heart of the old city centre. Two years later, the project has galvanized the local community who have all been offered work. The organization has cleared some 20,000 tons of rotting garbage from the streets, built a primary school, a clinic and restored several of the finest courtyard homes to near-mint condition. With an eye for capacity building Stewart has also developed a school for traditional crafts,

 • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

 • Ancient Bronze Age path and former drovers' route from Scotland to London, at Scotch Corner on the North Yorkshire moors. We look southwards downhill, a muddy lane on the edge of the North Yorks Moors National Park. For thousands of years, since the Bronze Age but more so in the last few centuries, the hooves of horses and sheep were transported along this path. Those treading the ground, helping to bring trade, spread news, introduce ideas and technology. Also known as Hambleton Street - or Via Regalis, after the Roman era - the footpath is now used by leisurely walkers on the Cleveland Way.
