The Measurement of the Milk festivals take place at the beginning of May, when the shepherds bring the flocks, which have spend a few days grazing in the hills, to meet the villagers at a clearing where the measurement will take place.  The sheep are milked by their owners, and the yield of each family’s animals measured to determine the quota of cheese that they will receive during that season.

The young, newly-married couple accepted the dam company’s offer to relocate them in a new concrete house and are among the first few residents of the mostly-empty, half-constructed resettlement site. Communities in this rural region are seeing their traditional self-sufficient farming and fishing lifestyle disrupted by dam building and the impact of climate change on crops, water quality and fish stocks.

  • A Mouchi ethnic minority man returns to the old village to collect wood from his previous home to use for construction in the villages new location, Ban Mouchee Kao, Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. Rural communities are being impelled to move from swidden to sedentary cultivation and farmers are being exhorted to produce for markets rather than for family consumption. Forests are being logged, rivers are being dammed, large tracts of land are being given over to largely foreign investors, and mining is on the rise.  Many villages have been forcibly displaced or moved or have voluntarily relocated in search of better conditions. Proponents argue these movements and consolidations increase the access of rural populations to roads, health and education services. Others might argue that it is to keep an eye on their activities and to foster or impel their incorporation into the emerging market economy.

With few roads that can transport supplies and raw materials up to remote foothill communities, the only way is often to carry what one needs on the back or by yak. The paths are even but often very steep in places so stamina and endurance are needed to get even modest weights uphill.   • Laos is the most bombed country, per capita, in the world with more than 270 million cluster bomb submunitions dropped on it during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1974. The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) are a humanitarian organisation clearing the remnants of conflict worldwide and have been working in Lao PDR since 1994. The community liaison teams are the eyes and ears of MAG, their job is to go out and liaise with communities to find out what and where the problem unexploded ordnance (UXO) problem is. Bouakham and the villagers watch as Maneevan Khodlakham produces a rough map of the village in consultation with the villagers of Ban Kua to show where past UXO accidents and visible UXO are located. Each villager is given the opportunity to influence where UXO clearance occurs. It is important that women's needs and opinions are sought.

The festival, which is called in Chinese "Miao Hui" takes place only once every 8 years for the Que Ken Ba Village. Villagers go to Chao Tian Yan temple to carry the Guan Yin Buddha (God of Mercy) back to their village's temple. (Sept.19-22 is the festival time, chinese calender) keep for a year, to protect the villagers, bring them good luck, happiness and fortune. At the end of the year, Sept.19 following year, the village send back the Buddha to Chao Tian Yan temple, and another village will carry it to their village's temple. there are 8 villages in this festival, so by turn, every village get a chance every 8 years. Chao Tian Yan temple dates back 700 years ago. The special festival has started since then, was only stopped for around 20 years because of Culture revolution. It<br />

Some of these ‘craft’ villages date back hundreds of years, whilst others are a more recent response to enable rural farmers to earn much needed extra income.
