  • Someone's confidential information and personal data stored on floppy and Zip discs is dumped in a skip (dumpster) on south London street. The digital media may not be readable by modern PC computers but the confidential information may still be taken by those intent on stealing identities for fraudulent purposes. The owner of these discs has nonetheless recklessly tipped them in a now rain soaked box and left them to be seen or taken by passes-by. Lying with building rubbish and household waste, the data is scattered and visible.

  • Construction hoarding and London cityscape showing the capital at The Pinnacle project on Bishopsgate in the City of London. Construction work has been suspended again on the Pinnacle in the City of London. Contractor Brookfield is understood to have been told to stop work following more funding concerns over the Square Mile’s tallest tower. Brookfield restarted work last September after developer Arab Investments put together a new finance package. But a lack of a pre-let tenant has now caused further delays on site leaving Byrne Bros concrete cores standing idle. The Bishopsgate Tower, informally referred to as The Pinnacle, was to be a 288 m (945 ft), 64-storey skyscraper in the centre of London's main financial district.

  • With a blindfolded trainer, a young Labrador dog learns how to negotiate obstructions and hazards as part of its training as a guide dog. There are around 5,000 working guide dogs in the UK today, though the Guide Dogs charity cares for around 8,000 dogs, including breeding stock, puppies, dogs in training and retired dogs. Before the young dog is allowed out into the real streets outside it must prove its natural ability to take its unsighted owner safely along a series of obstructive objects.

  • In late afternoon winter sun, a lady emerges from deep shadow wearing a fur hat on the Kings Road in Chelsea, London, England. Foreign magazines line a rack of an outdoor newsagent and we only see the lady's head in the sunlight. There is a low colour temperature orange glow to the picture and only the lady's face wrapped in a fur hat and the magazine covers can be seen in detail. There are few highlights apart from the magazines in the sun, and more shadow area making this a dark image. The Kings Road has been famous in London since the 60s when fashion and flower power was the label most associated with being young and hip in the Swinging Sixties. It is more sober these days but families and young people tend to be wealthier, white and middle-class than other areas such as Carnaby Street which is seen as seedy and cheap.

  • Standing late at night in the doorway of a Soho nightclub in Old Compton Street, London England, a bouncer provides security for his employer. Otherwise known as doormen or door supervisers, these usually hardened men offer a deterrent for anyone causing trouble inside ot out of licensed bars and clubs such as this. Lit from overhead spotlights, he looks menacing and capable of street violence - enough to urge troublemakers to move on quick. reflected in the glass is Ed's Diner a well-known eaterie in this street. Soho is known as a rather seedy but vibrant area of London's West End and late-night social disorder fuelled by excessive alcohol is pretty much normal.

  • Standing against strong Autumnal afternoon light, two police officers from an unknown constabulary, guard one entrance to the venue where the Conservative (Tory) Party Conference is being held, at the Bournemouth International Centre that overlooks the sea in Dorset, England. In 1990, the terrorist threat came from Irish Republicans (IRA) rather than Islamist extemists and credible threats proved to be correct, that these idealists wanted to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Police cordons were therefore an efficient method of controlling and restricting access to those without the proper delegates' or media accreditation. The most striking figure is the male officer in the foreground whose profile is prominent because of his traditional police helmet.

  • Awkwardly, carrying their giant rubber rings by wrapping their left hands over the top curves, three kids make their way tentatively down a ramp of concrete to a poolside ride called River Run. There are two yellow rings and one red, alternatively manhandled along the path which is already wet from other holidaymakers in this northern seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. We do not see the childrens' faces or upper-bodies and are therefore anonymous. A sign for the ride lists a series of rules for safe enjoyment of this leisure pursuit which they are urged to obey.

  • Gathered on the Docklands Light Railway track, a group of police investigators and health and safety experts stand beneath the devastation and wreckage caused by the IRA’s docklands bomb on 10th February 1996. Office windows have been blown out and shattered glass lies everywhere making these workplaces unusable for many months afterwards. We see the men under the tall buildings looking tiny in comparison to the chaotic aftermath of this enormous explosion the day before. The bombing marked the end of a 17-month IRA ceasefire during which Irish, British and American leaders worked for a political solution to the troubles in Northern Ireland. 2 people were killed in the half-tonne lorry bomb blast which caused an estimated £85 million damage.

  • Two days after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate, a main arterial road that travels north-south through London's financial area, City of London engineering officials examine the huge crater left by the terrorist device. We see debris around the hole with drainage and road material. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m²) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Costs of repairing the damage was estimated at £350 million. It was possibly the (IRA's) most successful military tactic since the start of the Troubles.

  • Standing on the roadside are three British traffic policemen. It is snowing in the depths of winter and the three officers are watching on-coming traffic as it negotiates safe routes downhill in South London. Wearing yellow jackets of the early 1990s we see the traces of snow that fell across the scene in diagonal blurs. Cars of the era drive along roads that have succumbed to the snowfall, seemingly unsalted or treated with anti-snow grit. In the background a couple walk carefully on hazardous pavements.

  • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.
