  • A walker admires the view across the escarpment of Tennyson Downs on the Isle-of-Wight. Looking over his shoulder into the distance, the walker is alone on his solo pursuit along some of Britain's most beautiful coastlines, here on the south coast. The rolling downland stretches westwards - its white chalk cliffs famous for symbolising England's southern limits. Tennyson Down is a hill at the west end of the Isle of Wight just south of Totland. Tennyson Down is a grassy, whale-backed ridge of chalk which rises to 482 ft/147m above sea level. Tennyson Down is named after the poet Lord Tennyson who lived at nearby Farringford House for nearly 40 years. The poet used to walk on the down almost every day, saying that the air was worth 'sixpence a pint'.

  • Muslim family walk past a wall by David Walker on Brick Lane. Street art in the East End of London is an ever changing visual enigma, as the artworks constantly change, as councils clean some walls or new works go up in place of others. • Half-way across the thin taut wire of a tightrope, an tightwire walker acrobat riding a monocycle pauses and wobbles to compensate his balance before continuing his journey across to safety at the other end of two supporting poles The act forms part of the Canadian circus troupe Cirque de Soleil during a show in Battersea, London. Blue and red spotlights illuminate this daredevil and we see his tights, his wide-sleeved theatrical shirt and the concentration and grim determination on his face - the look of a professional trickster at work. He may be showing a seemingly dangerous and unpredictable stunt though in truth, he will have rehearsed this simple balancing act for many years but must still keep up the illusion of danger for the sake of a gasping, gullible audience.

The landscape is magnificent but unforgiving and walkers mainly stay on well-marked paths or, as this lad is doing - walking along the A82 road that snakes through this Scottish Glen. He admits to having trekked from Glasgow on pagan fertility Wassail rite, once performed in medieval times. This region of Britain, lake many others, was populated by Viking raiders who later settled locally and raised families whose descendents now inhabit the UK. English is full of old Norse words as are place names.
