Ironically, warm-ups perform a preliminary act before a TV show is recorded to literally warm an audience into non-spontaneous laughter to help a comedy's atmosphere - albeit with the help of prompt signs like these. The first National Lottery Live show was at 19:00 on Saturday 19 November 1994.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.

  • A mother holds her young son high into the air while waste deep in the warm waters of Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill, south London, SE24. It is a fine summer's day and the pool is quiet before a rush of other families return for another day at their local pool. The mum throws the lad up and he squeels with delight at being thrust so high above the water's surface. This lido was opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond

  • A portrait of a mother in her 41st year has been gathering heather in handfuls and holds up her young child who grins towards his father who is taking the picture at a park near the Essex seaside town of Southend. It is the summer of 1960 and the mum's dress is styled from the previous decade: blue with white spots and pearl necklace. She too is smiling as she grasps the flowers and her child on a warm day. Oddly, the boy looks as though he is wearing a girl's dress which may have been a hand-me-down from an older sibling or just the trend then.

With other bathers also lying in sun on the warm poolside pavement, some white and another Rastafarian with dreadlocks, it's a largely mixed crowd ethnically. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • Ron Whittam, a member of the Serpentine Swimming Club, drinks a cup of tea after swimming on a cold Winter's day, Hyde Park, London, UK. The Serpentine Lake is situated in Hyde Park, London’s largest central open space. The Serpentine Swimming Club was formed in 1864 ‘to promote the healthful habit of bathing in open water throughout the year’. Its headquarters were beneath an old elm tree on the south side of the lake, a wooden bench for clothing being the only facility. At this time London was undergoing rapid expansion and Hyde Park was now in the centre of a densely populated built up area and provided a place of relaxation to its urbanised masses. Now, the club has its own (somewhat spartan) changing facilities and members are permitted by the Royal Parks to swim in the lake any morning before 09:30. They race every Saturday morning throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

These boys are among those trying for a highly-valued place in the regiment after a gruelling series of tests to eliminate the weaker and less able candidates. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. Nepal has been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.

  • Extinction Rebellion activists put up posters at the office of Environment Secretary and the Member of Parliament for Camborne in Cornwall, George Eustice MP, to protest against his environmental record on 25th June 2020 in St Ives, United Kingdom. On the same day the Climate Change Committee will deliver it’s progress report to the Government, XR believe that the government is failing in its commitments to reach net zero emissions by 2050, a target they see as already woefully inadequate. They also believe that it will say they are failing in their responsibilities to keep people safe. They are demanding our MPs force the government to take immediate preventative action to avoid climate collapse by implementing a covid recovery plan that achieves net zero carbon emissions by 2025.

  • High in the Nepali Himalayan foothills, travellers may be greeted by the welcoming relief of a group of mountain inns and hotels offering lodging to weary legs after many hours walking uphill in this gruelling landscape. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.
