  • A giant eye from a construction site hoarding appears to be watching pedestrians and their long shadows on Neal Street, London. Reminiscent of an Orwellian 'Big Brother' scenario, where in the book 1984, the State is seen to be spying on its citizens, we see the portion of the large face's eye open and gazing at the passers-by who walk past unaware of their secret surveillance. It is an autumn afternoon and long shadows stretch across the pavement as the pedestrians get on with everyday life - activities that may require reporting on by those needing to know what the People are doing, saying and thinking.

  • An elderly lady widow resident of a tower block, enjoys the company of TV newsreader in her inner-city home. Watching the television news programme on which a black man of perhaps afro-Caribbean descent is presenting, the lady sits with a cup of tea, wearing pink slippers and surrounded by personal possessions that line the sill of her high-rise window, overlooking the Middlesex Estate in the City of London. She is alone apart from the on-screen presence of the male presenter empty of human contact or friendly neighbours. She lives alone in this inner city flat but she is looking after herself showing brushed hair, a lace top and lipstick. The world outside is a depressingly empty landscape of concrete walkways and garage doors, an inner-city environment devoid of human interaction or friendliness.

  • A crowd watching from the donkey derby field the arrival of the marines by parachute as they visited Butlins holiday camp Skegness, giving a disply to the crowd and encouraging recruitment during the Falklands war. Butlins Skegness is a holiday camp located in Ingoldmells near Skegness in Lincolnshire. Sir William Butlin conceived of its creation based on his experiences at a Canadian summer camp in his youth and by observation of the actions of other holiday accommodation providers, both in seaside resort lodging houses and in earlier smaller holiday campsThe camp began opened in 1936, when it quickly proved to be a success with a need for expansion. The camp included dining and recreation facilities, such as dance halls and sports fields. Over the past 75 years the camp has seen continuous use and development, in the mid-1980s and again in the late 1990s being subject to substantial investment and redevelopment. In the late 1990s the site was re-branded as a holiday resort, and remains open today as one of three remaining Butlins resorts.

  • In front of an appreciative mainly lady audience, a flamenco dancer puts passion into her performance in a caseta (marquee) during the Spring Feria in Seville, Spain. She dramatically stamps her foot and raises her arms in a Juerga an informal, spontaneous gathering where dancing, singing, palmas (hand clapping), or simply pounding in rhythm are enjoyed. Grown out of the fusion of Arabic, Andalusian, Sephardic, and Gypsy cultures traditional flamenco artists simply learned by listening and watching relatives, friends and neighbours. It adapts to the local talent, instrumentation and mood of the audience. Seville holds its annual fair in rows of temporary marquee casetas, hosting families and friends which begin during the April Fair two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

  • Hidden in a wooden hut, a group of bird-spotting ornithologists peer through binoculars at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) rreserve at Rainham Marshes, Essex England. Watching dozens of wintering birds, the group are intensely looking through their optical equipment in anticipation of seeing rare breeds at this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a wetland alongside the River Thames, 20 miles from Central London. A narrow slit is open to keep them hidden from sight so leaning on elbows and with a guide sheet in front to identify particular species, they concentrate on their hobby. The RSPB has 200 nature reserves covering almost 130,000 hectares, home to 80% of Britain's rarest or most threatened bird species. Its role is to speak out for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten the environment.

  • The solitary figure of a man stands on the roof of an office building in downtown Atlanta during a victory parade for the city's baseball team. The man may be a security guard, keeping watch over the streets below as crowds gather to honour the Atlanta Braves Baseball team, after their 1995 World Series win. The figure is in his manmade environment and the high walls and windows of the buildings that make up this metropolis dwarf this tiny human who in the scale and perspective of a modern city looks incongruous, isolated and insignificant.

  • In the 24hrs that a further 38 died from Coronavirus, bringing the total to 41,736, a further easing of the UK’s Covid pandemic lockdown restrictions took place with many high street shops today being allowed to re-open after three months of forced closure. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wanting to stimulate the economy, has urged people to shop with confidence and long queues formed outside the main brands. But unlike on public transport, face coverings are not compulsory so shop floors and shopping practices have had to be adapted to ensure customers’ social distances, amid fears of a second infection wave. A police officer is positioned on an especially-built raised scaffolding platform to watch the public at this important moment of economic progress, on Regent Street, on 15th June 2020, in London, England.
