  • Leaping over waves, London Fire Brigade (LFB) fire fighters train on the River Thames using an inflatable dinghy. Crossing the wake of another vessel, the inflatable jumps, as the fire-fighter holds on tight to a rope at the boat's bow while two colleagues sit on the read for ultimate balance so the dinghy can ride over the turbulent waters. Spray from the waves splash them although they wear waterproofs and fire service helmets.

  • An aerial view looking down from a highpoint, on to the shallows and surf of waters near Lynton, Devon, England. Windsurfers traverse the windy seascape on a spring day on this south-western coast, one of England's warmest regions. Here, young surfers and ocean adventurers travel to these parts where the beaches are level and where the waves arrive at the coast in perfectly-formed breakers. In the picture, one surfer has fallen from their board, the sail now horizontal in the water. But the others are upright and travelling across the wind, expertly riding the waves.

  • As foamy waves washes up on the shore, an Instructor from a Brighton seafront kayak operator, pushes a rather large beginner out into the surf to join friends already at sea. The amateur canoeist holds on to his paddles in the correct position as he enters the water. In the distance, his mates have made their way out and are now small in the distance and the last man has to wait a frustrating few more moments to launch in the right wave. Timing is important for this helpless novice who needs to have the expert teacher push him in.

  • A rather obese woman stands in the waves at the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. With hands behind her back and fingers interlocked the lady wears a turquoise bathing costume that just about fits her ample, wide body. Her bottom is large as are her legs that have cellulite on the tops of her thighs. She looks left alone, a solitary person standing with her back to the viewer - or perhaps she is standing guard, keeping watch on children as they play safely in the sea. Water splashes against her lower legs and is frozen still by a fast shutter speed. It is a fine, bright sunny afternoon on this Eastern coast of England, more noted for very changeable weather rather than the heatwave experienced here.

  • Fishermen cling to the rock face as the try pry clear with knives or poles the Spanish delicacy of "Percebes" a highly priced and very expensive gooseneck barnacle that grows only on rocks with heavy surf. There are only a few regions that they can be cultivated, including the Rias Altas region of Galicia. It is a very dangerous occupation as many fishermen are often killed as they get slammed into the rock due to the very heavy tidle waves.

  • The shore of Boca do Inferno, Sao Tome. Boca de Inferno Hells mouth, is an inlet where waves flow into a narrow ravine that leads to a cave with a hole in the roof. The water then builds up to be forced up through the hole to create a cascade of water that shoots up into the air. Sao Tome and Principe, are two islands of volcanic origin lying off the coast of Africa. Settled by Portuguese convicts in the late 1400s and later a centre for slaving, their independence movement culminated in a peaceful transition to self government from Portugal in 1975.

  • As stormy waves crash over its super-structure and funnel, the Liberian-registered MV Braer oil tanker spills 84,700 tonnes of crude oil into the North Sea. It sits below its water-line with crude oil leaking from its ruptured tanks after running ground in hurricane force winds, beeching itself on these rocks in Quendale Bay, west of Sunburgh Head, the Shetland Islands, Scotland. In fast-fading light, this ecological disaster occured in a beautiful region of Great Britain affecting much native wildlife although the Gulfaks oil the Braer was carrying is lighter therefore more biodegradable and able to disperse better than other North Sea crude.

  • Ducking under the falling spray from a giant wave, a passer-by experience the force of nature from a storm off the coasts of southern England - here at the Port of Dover, Kent. As the water hits the sea defence wall, the seaside town is battered by southerly winds that bring with them huge breakers across the promenade. Adventurous and foolhardy people brave these conditions and stay for as long as possible at the railings then jump out at the last moment before getting doused in salt spray. This man carries on walking and thinks that by bending down, the sea will pass overhead.

  • Dancing Ledge, Langton Matravers, Swanage, Dorset. Blasted into the rock to provide bracing exercise for pupils from a nearby prep school, Dancing Ledge was so called because of the area of stone cut from this disused quarry is the size of a ballroom dance floor. Until the 1950s and the rise of the heated indoor swimming pool, children learnt to swim outdoors. For those close to the sea, many man-made tidal swimming pools were constructed around Britain’s coastline. Heated by the sun, these tidal pools were often built to keep bathers safe from high and rough seas, which explains why so many of them are clustered in Scotland and around the surfing beaches of Cornwall. Whether they are simple swimming holes made by shoring up natural rock pools or grand lido-like pools complete with lifeguards and tea huts, they are all refreshed by good high tides.

  • After her daily swim, an elderly local woman climbs out of Porthtowan Pool, Cornwall, UK. A beautifully wild tidal pool surrounded by cliffs and rocks, with a retaining concrete wall. "Weekdays are nicer, on weekends you get all the young ones coming and throwing themselves in, they don't swim".
